Members of the Tenby and District Cymrodorion Society enjoyed a celebration of St. David's Day at the Broadmead Hotel, Tenby, on Friday, March 6. Mrs. Trevena Vincent, this year's chairman of the society, was delighted to welcome everyone, the regular members who are so loyal as well as many new friends who were attending for the first time.
After a delicious meal, distinctively Welsh, prepared by Marlene and Gary, the guest for the afternoon, Hefin Wyn from Maenclochog, took centre stage. Hefin's work as a journalist and reporter for BBC Wales had afforded him plenty of opportunity to travel widely and meet interesting people who were then making the news.
Speaking articulately in Welsh and English, his theme, so appropriate for the occasion, was 'Welshness' and what it meant to various people at different times in their lives. He referred specifically to the contribution that well known people in the area had made to Wales and for Wales and reminded everyone that there was a valuable legacy to preserve and hand over to future generations.
Part of this legacy is the land itself and the hills of the Preselau are free to roam today because of the titanic struggle by the local people of the area between 1946-8 to keep the hills 'holy' and free from military activities. With doggedness and a well-thought case, they took on the might of the MOD and won.
Hefin Wyn's recent publication 'Battle of the Preseli Hills' documents this struggle and pays tribute to those determined characters and their momentous campaign, to keep something precious.
He thanked the society for the invitation to the celebration and hoped that the Cymrodorion would continue to foster and safeguard Welshness in the Tenby area. The society had an important responsibility to do so.
The chairman concluded the afternoon by thanking everyone for attending and therefore making the celebration possible, and especially Mr. J. Bevan, Mr. I. John and Mrs. G. Williams for their individual contribution to the occasion.
The next meeting of the society will be the annual general meeting on Thursday, April 16, at 2.30 pm, at St. Johns, Tenby.
