This year, the annual charity Cardiff to Tenby cycle ride by the 'CARTEN 100' - so called because it starts in Cardiff and ends in Tenby and is 100 miles long, took place on April 28 with 38 riders, the most so far. The event was organised by James Lewis, of Lewis Opticians, and Peter Palmer, osteopath, both working in Caerphilly. The riders came from Cardiff, Vale of Glam, Caerphilly, Ammanford and Tenby, with nearly all of last year's riders repeating the ride. Fund-raising was for The Joshua Foundation, a local charity that provides holidays and experiences for terminally ill children and their families. The final amount raised isn't collected yet, but looks to be in the region of about £5,000 - £6,000. All riders had brought cycling jerseys in the CARTEN 100 colours which had been sponsered by Admiral Insurance, Sofa Sofa and Andrew Milward Joinery. All of the places they stopped at also generously donated towards the charity. The day was dry and sunny, with a helpful tail wind towards Tenby. Most of the riders had been preparing over the weeks prior to the ride, but a couple did have a go with very little preparation. The idea of the ride is to be sociable and not to race, so there were several stops, including Port Talbot for full English breakfast, Pembrey for a light lunch and Red Roses for a drinks stop at the famous Sporting Chance pub - famous for being at the top of a 4.5 mile long hill! Last year's winner of the 'King of the Mountain' for climbing the hill the fastest, Dafydd Lloyd was deposed by his neighbour, Dave Staziker, and had to pass on the polka dot shirt! All the riders re-grouped at the Sporting Chance to ride together into Tenby to the finish at the Crown, Lower Frog Street, where the new landlord made the riders welcome with a free drink. At the third attempt, Daz Bateman completed the ride; the last two years, mechanical failures had stopped him, but despite a damaged tyre he completed this time, as did all the riders. All the riders have expressed a wish to go on next year's ride, and more friends and collegues have asked to go on next year's 'trip'.
