A Pembroke man has been remanded in custody for 13 weeks after breaking the terms of an 18-month suspended sentence, when he stole from a local supermarket store.
Twenty-four-year-old Ashley Anthony Mardon pleaded guilty to the theft of vodka and chicken slices from Lidl in Pembroke Dock, when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Ellie Morgan told the court that the incident occurred at 3 pm, on March 28, when a shop worker saw Mr. Mardon and another male messing around in the store.
When police arrived on the scene after being alerted that the defendant may have taken items from the store without paying for them, Mr. Mardon told officers who found the chicken and mushroom slices and vodka on him, that he was 'steaming', but said sorry for what he had done.
Ms Morgan told magistrates that this was the third time that Mr. Mardon had come before the court since being given a suspended sentence in June of last year.
His solicitor, James Subbiani, said that it was a low value shoplifting offence that his client had committed, but he was in breach of his order.
He explained that back in March, Mr. Mardon had split from his wife, who he had two children with, and since then his life had gone into turmoil.
Mr. Subbiani said his client was penniless and had been living in a homeless hostel and had unfortunately returned to committing offences with others who he resided with, whilst under the influence of alcohol.
"This was a blip caused by difficulties within his life," Mr. Subbiani explained, adding that his client was now back in contact with his wife and most importantly his two children.
He added that it had been 11 months since the suspended sentence was imposed
Mr. Mardon's probation officer, Julie Norman, told magistrates that she was disappointed that he had been re-offending whilst living within the hostel, but that his life was now stable again and she was confident there would be no further offending.
Magistrates elected to activate the suspended sentence and ordered Mr. Mardon to spend 13 weeks in custody and also pay compensation of £10.48 to the Lidl store.
