The Harry Payne OBE Cup is a well supported and successful event which takes place in the Pembroke Dock Bowling Club calendar every year. It is a two-wood triples event, with this year 18 teams taking part.
Due to the number of entrants, the day was split into morning and afternoon sessions consisting of four leagues, with each team playing one another over five ends. The winners of each league were represented in the semi-finals, which was played over seven ends.
The final, played over nine ends, took place after a splendid afternoon tea was had by all in the clubhouse, which was provided and well supported by all club members.
The runners-up were Mrs. J. Miller, J. Navatt and R. Duncombe, who only lost by two shots to the eventual winners, K. Church, Mrs. C. Bethwaite and R. Jones, of Pembroke Dock Bowling Club.
The trophies were presented by Mrs. Diane Bann and the event was once again well organised by Mr. Gerard Thomas.
A speech was given by the Pembrokeshire County president, Mr. Arthur Jarvis, who thanked everyone in the club for the sterling work that had been carried out in the club during his presidential year. A special thank you went to the ladies' section for the splendid meals they produced over the season, making them the envy of many bowling clubs throughout the county and South Wales.
Also a big thank you went to the green staff (all voluntary members from within the club) for the marvellous bowling surface they produced, which must have helped in the success of the Pembrokeshire county team in its very successful season.
Pembroke Dock Bowling Club has a superb reputation for its friendliness and hospitality shown to all visiting bowlers, and also welcomes all non-bowlers; new members are always welcome.
