Graham Jewson Harrison-Allen Bowl

(Second round)

Narberth travelled to Pembroke Dock and scored a massive total of 227 for 1. Marc Hughes dominated the bowling attack in this superb display and scored 117 not out with seven 6s and 10 fours.

Opener Peter Davies had an aggressive innings of 70 with nine 4s and two 6s and Richard Adams was content to play the supporting role with 25 not out.

In reply, the Dock reached 71 for 7. Although they were never in the chance of winning the match, the younger Pembroke Dock players will have gained a lot in experience after playing a competitive match against first division opposition.

Peter Kingdom, who epitomises the new spirit in the Pembroke Dock club by being the youngest league secretary, batted extremely well for his 28 before being bowled in the closing overs by Garry Hughes, and Jamie White backed up with 11.

Spinner Nick Evans used his head wisely to take 3 for 13 and Garry Hughes also had an accurate spell and ended with 3 for 20.

Despite the gathering mist, the Pembroke Dock ground looked in excellent shape and the club are determined to move forward.

Behind the scenes, officials such as president Malcolm Powell, chairman John Sheppard and treasurer Maurice Leyland are the guiding lights, helped by senior players such as skipper Malcolm Morris, all-rounder John Davies, Steve Larne and Neil Bulley, who shows his commitment to the club by travelling down each weekend from London to play.

More spectators would be attracted to the ground if passing motorists and pedestrians were able to watch the cricket from the road, as is the case overlooking the low wall at Pembroke.

Unfortunately, with the high wall on the roadside of the ground, many passers-by would not know that cricket is taking place.

In a closer contest at Hook, visitors Whitland had a comfortable win in the end by eight wickets with an over to spare.

Hook were well and truly on the rack at 20 for 5, but all-rounder Gary Martin supported by Mathew Holder combined in a sixth wicket partnership which produced 81 invaluable runs and Hook eventually reached the commendable score of 120 for 7.

Gary Martin scored 37 with five 4s before giving a return catch to Whitland skipper Paul Webb and Mathew Holder was 26 not out.

Mathew Davies had three quick wickets at the start of the Hook innings and ended with 3 for 22.

A second wicket partnership of 64 between Paul Davies and David Lee was instrumental in the visitors reaching a total of 125 for 2.

David Lee scored 30 with five 4s and Davies went on to score 58 not out with seven 4s.

Mark Lee took over where his brother left off with an undefeated innings of 20 and ended the match with a six off Mathew Holder.

In the quarter-finals Neyland will be home to Lawrenny on Monday, June 21, the big match will be between Carew and Haverfordwest at Carew on Tuesday, June 22, Cresselly could have a difficult match at Narberth on Wednesday, June 23, and Whitland, who are determined to reach the final this season, will be home to Burton on Thursday, June 24.

The semi-finals will be played on Tuesday, July 13, and Thursday, July 15, at venues to be announced and the draw will take place towards the end of June.

Duggie Morris Cup

In an exciting finish at Pembroke, visitors Narberth won by four wickets with just three balls remaining, after Pembroke had scored 112 for 8.

Left-hander Barry Evans was the main contributor to the total with a solid innings of 53, supported by all-rounder Nigel Phillips with 23.

For the visitors, rejuvenated spinner Nick Evans took 2 for 20, all-rounder Wayne Howells 2 for 22 and the consistent Garry Hughes 2 for 28.

All teams must use five bowlers with a maximum of four overs per bowler in this competition. The fifth bowler, Richard Prout, did not take a wicket, but he tied up one end in his four overs as he only conceded 12 runs.

When Narberth replied, opener Peter Davies had a typically aggressive short innings of 18. Ian Hughes (11) and Wayne Howells (13) also got into double figures, but it was the lower order who did the business in the end for Narberth.

Ceri Jones scored a brisk 20 and Garry Hughes showed his all round qualities with a match-winning innings of 20 not out.

For Pembroke, all-rounder Gwyn Griffiths took 2 for 12 and Daniel Scourfield took 2 for 22.

In another close finish at Neyland, the run out of Neyland captain Andrew Miller for 65, the dismissal of Jay Dunsford on the boundary with an amazing catch by Phil Cole off the bowling of Ian Jenkins and the economical bowling of Robert Williams at the death, each in their own way acted as turning points, with the result that the visitors, Lawrenny, won this absorbing contest by three runs.

Lawrenny scored 149 for 7. Steven Lewis, who is in good form at present, top scored with 30, supported by another in form batsman, Christian Phillips, with 25, with Andrew Cole senior (19), Ian Jenkins (17 not out) and Robert Williams (16) also making useful contributions to the total.

The Neyland bowlers also bowled nine wides, which in the end proved crucial.

Jay Dunsford and Greg Miller both returned figures of 2 for 26.

Andrew Miller had a top quality innings of 65 with a six and eight 4s before he was run out with only three overs of the match remaining.

Phil Davies scored 17 and Jeremy Charles 11, while Jay Dunsford opened his shoulders in a bid to give Neyland victory.

After hitting a six from the previous ball, Dunsford was well taken on the boundary by Phil Cole and with Robert Williams holding his nerve as he gave little away when he bowled two of the last three overs, the Neyland challenge ended on a total of 146 for 9.

In contrast to the Neyland bowlers, the Lawrenny bowlers only conceded three wides.

Skipper Robert Williams ended with 2 for 19 and Stephen Rees finished with 2 for 35.

Carew cruised to a seven wickets win at home to Lamphey following a top quality all round bowling performance which resulted in Lamphey struggling to reach 78 for 9.

Daniel Sutton was the only batsman in double figures with 26 as Simon Wood took 3 for 13 and John Canton 2 for 11, with the other three bolwers used each taking a wicket.

Nick Scourfield, with an accomplished innings of 35, including five 4s, and Simon Wood, with 29 not out from 35 deliveries, took Carew to a winning total of 80 for 3
