The countryside truly came to town on bank holiday Saturday as members of young farmers clubs across Pembrokeshire supported their annual County Rally at the County Showground. As an organisation, the YFC movement has it's origins in the 1920s and was started to give young people in the countryside a means of socialising with others in their areas. Today there are over 700 clubs across England and Wales - linked to kindred organisations worldwide - and membership in Wales is presently the highest for a decade or more. The main function of the clubs these days is exactly the same, but today YFC offers young people so much more than just a social life. By joining, any young person opens a door to a world of opportunity where you can meet new people, learn skills, help the community, travel abroad, compete in a wide range of activities and, of course, engage in the opportunity of having a great time doing it all! The other key attribute of YFC is that the members of clubs are the ones who run them. Not only is this another opportunity to learn and to gain new experience which could prove handy on a CV, but it also means that clubs only do those things that they feel are fun and important. There are 13 clubs across rural Pembrokeshire, some with up to 70 members, and practically all clubs took part in all or some of the tests, competitions and events that made up a nine- hour programme on Rally Day. At the end of an exciting, and at times nail-biting day, the jubilant overall winners were announced as Eglwyswrw club with Llysyfran as runners-up. Llysyfran won both the senior and pre-rally trophies and the winners of the junior shield were Llawhaden. Commenting on another resounding success the federation chairman, Tim John, paid high tribute to the county staff, fellow officials, leaders, members and their families for their enthusiastic and ongoing support to so many activities provided by the movement as a whole. The customary well supported dance which followed was also held in part of the Showground complex.
