Dyfed (Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire) Primary Schools cross-country teams competed against seven other school districts in a competition held at the Celtic Manor, Newport, last Sunday.

Some 56 athletes competed for the Dyfed Schools, whose teams were successful in winning three out of the four age group races and finishing second in the other race to the West Glamorgan team.

Two Dyfed athletes, Chelsea Ward (Orielton) and Hannah Jones (Llangennech), won the individual girls races.

A number of pupils from local schools were among the competitors and their results included the following:

Year 5 boys (1st): Callum Proctor, Stepaside (12th); Daniel Brown, Penally (22nd).

Year 5 girls (2nd): Tasha Kinsey, Tenby (18th); Joanna Rowe, Tenby (33rd); Hannah McNeil, Hendygwyn (49th).

Year 6 girls (1st): Charlotte Enoch, Hendygwyn (13th).

Year 6 boys (1st): Chris Heesom, Tenby (16th).

At the same venue, the Dyfed secondary school boys team won their race and the girls team were second to the West Glamorgan team.

The Welsh Schools National Cross Country Championships are being held at the Penlan track tomorrow (Saturday). Dyfed Schools have won the overall title every year since 1991.

On Wednesday, March 13, the annual Dyfed Primary Schools Cross Country Championships will be held at the United Counties Showground, Nantyci, Carmarthen. The first race is at 4.30 pm and 1,500 competitors from over 60 schools will be competing in the eight races.

The inter-county primary school cross country match is at the Trinity College Fields, Johnstown, Carmarthen, on Wednesday, March 20.
