On Friday, November 30, Narberth Cricket Club held a Grand Hollywood themed ball at Narberth Rugby Club to raise funds for the club's ever- expanding junior section. The evening began with the 80-plus formally dressed guests, including the Mayor of Narberth, Clr. Liz Rogers, arriving on a red carpet. Everyone was greeted with a glass or two of champagne, sponsored by Mrs. Sara Kent, of Tanners Wine Merchants, Shrewsbury. The function room at the rugby club was beautifully festooned with all manner of Hollywood themed decorations. Following the reception, the participants were lavished with a sumptuous two-course buffet meal, prepared by the ladies committee. The evening's co-sponsor, Andrew J. Rees and Sons Butchers, Narberth, supplied the cold meats for the meal, which proved very popular, as the race to the tables showed! Attendees were then treated to a few hours of wonderful entertainment from Miss Mary-Jane Rees, who sang various songs from present and past, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Following this, all guests were delighted by a short firework display, which was sponsored by Mr. Nick Evans, of the Cricket Shop, Narberth. Next came the highlight of the evening, the auction. Many items of both sporting and film memorabilia were offered for sale. The club would like to thank all who participated in the excitement; purchasing a signed Swansea City football shirt donated by Narberth's own Swansea player, Joe Allen, a signed Harry Potter photo and a Llanelli Scarlets signed rugby shirt. The committee were absolutely delighted that the auction alone raised over £400. The evening drew to close with the club's resident DJ, Andrew Jenkins, entertaining all into the small hours, and finally, chairman Huw Simpkins was overwhelmed to inform all participants that the evening had raised over £1,700 for the juniors. He ended the evening by informing all guests that as the night had been such a resounding success, it would become an annual event in Narberth's social calendar. On behalf of the fund-raising committee, the junior members and coaches, Narberth Cricket Club would like to sincerely thank all who attended, especially the non-members and the evening's main sponsors, who gave so generously to the event. In particular, the club would like to thank Ann, John, Sioned and all at the Rugby Club, Clr. Wyn Evans, Mrs. Marion Lewis, Mrs. Ann Vincent, Mrs. Jane Evans, Mrs. Rose Simpkins and Mrs. Heather Howell and the many others too numerous to mention.
