Whitland's Paul Webb provides the figures, while Observer correspondent David Gibbs provides the facts in a fascinating review of how the players performed in Division One of the Dragon Sports Pembroke County Cricket League last season.

In the last look at last season's Division One averages, the two relegated teams Llangwm and Saundersfoot come under the spotlight. Neither team was able to field settled teams through injuries and also because some key players were not available on a regular basis through work commitments. Only two Llangwm batsmen, Chris Inward and Jo Jo Francis, topped the 200 figure in the season, but Llangwm have a star of the future in the talented Stephen Inward, who made his debut in Division One last season at the tender age of 13. He is a left-handed batsman with an excellent technique and remarkable composure. He is certain to score heavily next season for Llangwm in Division Two in between his commitments for Welsh Schools. Llangwm pace bowler Andrew Phillips is one of the fastest bowlers on the circuit, but his appearances were restricted so that the Llangwm attack sometimes lacked a cutting edge. Skipper Darren Brick shored up in the bowling attack week in week out and was the club's leading wicket-taker during the league season. Paul Mansbridge was the leading batsman for Saundersfoot and came within two runs of reaching an aggregate of 400 during the season. Mansbridge and wicketkeeper Ian Poole were the most dependable of the team's batsmen, although attacking left-hander Michael Williams played some memorable innings' during his fleeting appearances. Opponents prized the scalps of Mansbridge and Poole and once one of them was dismissed, wickets tended to fall fairly quickly, as the fall of one of their wickets opened up the other end. Skipper Chris Parker held the bowling attack together and was the leading wicket-taker with 25 wickets, but only two other bowlers, Kevin Sykes and Danny Caine, reached a total in double figures during the season. To succeed in Division One, teams must have batsmen who can score consistently and a penetrative bowling attack and Saundersfoot struggled in both departments last season. However, they will look to re-group next season in Division Two, where some of the younger players in the squad will have a chance to develop.
