This week, Pembrokeshire locals took part in a family bird walk to learn about birds and other wildlife at Pembroke Millponds. Children then built their own bird boxes to take home, some of them being delighted to use hammer and nails for the very first time!

Education officer Bethan Lloyd said: "Hopefully, the boxes they have built will be new homes for blue tit families in the spring.

"It's great to get out and enjoy the fantastic wildlife we have here at the Millponds. When you see people's faces light up and get excited about the species such as mute swan and black-headed gull, it really reminds you of how lucky we are to have this all on our doorstep.

"Building the bird boxes afterwards adds to the experience as people realise they are able to directly support and help their local wildlife."

This event made use of the outdoor classroom next to Barnard's Tower carved by the Monkton Priory Unit and sculptor Rob Jakes.

The family bird walk was part of a wider education project run by Pembroke 21C Community Association, focused on Pembroke Millponds and Holyland Wood. Keep an eye out for other exciting holiday activities and Wild Club - a children's wildlife club run from Foundry House Community Centre on the second Thursday of the month during term time.

The project is supported by funding from Natural Resources Wales and from the Port of Milford Haven.
