Over 400 people have been stopped checked in the Pembrokeshire Police Division in the first 10 days of the Christmas drink and drug driving campaign.

Officers have been out in force stopping motorists in a bid to educate them about the dangers of drink and drug driving and to catch any offenders.

As a result of the operation, four men have been charged with driving whilst over the legal alcohol limit.

As a result of the operation, 10 drivers, nine males and one female have been arrested for driving whilst over the prescribed drink drive limit. One of these, who was a Polish 37-year-old lorry driver was stopped while driving a 40-tonne articulated lorry in Fishguard. As a result of a court appearance on December 11, he received a 20- month driving ban and £400 fine.

Last week, the Pembrokeshire Roads Policing Unit, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Pembrokeshire County Council road safety were joined by Scarlets' players Darren Daniel and Scott McCloud to promote the campaign to shoppers at Tescos in Pembroke Dock.

Inspector Nigel Hayes, who is in charge of the division's road policing, said: "Drink and drug driving is not acceptable at any time of the year. "By highlighting the dangers, educating people and enforcement, we aim to reduce the number of drink drivers on the road."

The county council's cabinet member for environment and transport, Clr. Brian Hall, said he was pleased that the three agencies were working together to support the drink drive campaign.
