The Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Clr. Mrs. Rosemary Hayes, has written to The Queen expressing sorrow at the death of The Queen Mother.

Clr. Mrs Hayes explained in the letter that she was writing on behalf of the people of Pembrokeshire. She said the Queen Mother was 'simply irreplaceable.'

The letter went on: 'Her Majesty engendered love and admiration from people of all ages with her warm and affectionate nature.

'Her devotion to duty throughout her public life commanded widespread respect.

'This was never better illustrated than in the dark days of World War Two when Her Majesty, along with the late King, was a source of inspiration and hope for our nation.'

Within hours of the announcement of the Queen Mother's death, flags flew at half mast at public buildings in the county.

Members of the public are invited to sign books of condolence at the following locations:

County Hall, Haverfordwest; Milford Town Hall; Fishguard Town Hall; Neyland Town Hall; De Valence Pavilion, Tenby; Pater Hall, Pembroke Dock; Llanion Offices, Pembroke Dock.

Members of Narberth Town Council also paid their respects to the Queen Mother when they stood for a minute's silence prior to their monthly meeting on Tuesday night.

A letter of condolence has also been sent by the town's Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Rees, to HM The Queen and the Royal Family, expressing the "sincere and heartfelt sympathy" of the people of Narberth.

"Although the Queen Mother had reached a great age, it is still a shock to lose a loved one, and the more bitterly felt for you Majesty after losing a dear sister only seven weeks ago," Clr. Mrs. Rees wrote in her letter.

"I know all your people feel for you at this very sad time," she continued.

"Your mother was a grandmother to the nation and she will be remembered by us all for her devotion to duty and the great example she set.

"She was a wonderful lady and will be fondly remembered in our hearts and prayers always," Clr. Mrs. Rees concluded in her letter.

A book of condolence has also opened at the Queen's Hall, which was signed by councillors at their meeting and will remain open until next Tuesday for members of the public to pay their own tributes.
