'Managing Change in Rural Environments', tourism case studies in Pembrokeshire and Zanzibar, was launched at Pembrokeshire Water Sports Centre on Friday to an audience of teachers and students from schools across West Wales and representatives of organisations that were involved in the production of this new resource.
Cathryn Al Kanaan, of Global Connections, gave thanks to the many people and organisations that made the resource a reality and welcomed the prestigious author, David Waugh, as the key speaker.
Drawing from his renowned experience in GCSE and A level geography texts, he felt that 'Managing Change in Rural Environments' would prove to be an invaluable asset to schools and colleges.
"By comparing Pembrokeshire and Zanzibar, this publication shows, despite differences in their levels of development, two places where the traditional way of life and the local economy have undergone rapid change," he said.
" In both cases, the growth of tourism has been at the expense of traditional mainly primary activities and has led to increasing pressure on local communities and the local environment. These pressures, and the attempts to make tourism sustainable, are described and explained through a wide range of material that includes a series of authentic case studies. "
The resource was the culmination of two and a half years work from various people at Global Connections, with support from the National Lotteries Charity Board and CAFOD.
During the day, a range of taster workshops focussing on issues linked to sustainable tourism in Pembrokeshire and Zanzibar and a sumptuous fairtrade buffet were enjoyed by all.
