Pembrokeshire's rugby squad to play Dyfed Powys Police at Narberth next Wednesday, November 12, has been selected with an eye to the future.

County coach Kenny Davies said: "It has been a difficult few years for the county side for many reasons. The side has been picked with the future in mind, as most of the players are under 23, with a few older heads in the team.

"The only way forward is for me to work with clubs and coaches that I know or with the players that I have coached before. I'm looking forward to working with all of them.

"We need some luck over the next week with injuries and then we can start planning for the season. The Police game gives us an ideal opportunity to prepare."

The squad selected is: forwards - Scott Payne, Anthony Griffiths, Chris James, Lee Tucker (Tenby), Kevin Davies, Alan Phillips, Jamie Bohata (Narberth), Carwyn Davies, John Bowen, Stuart Tyrie (Whitland), Lewis Wood (Haverfordwest), and Carl Williams (Pembroke Dock).

Backs - Matthew Kelly, Steve Williams, John Whitticombe (Haverfordwest), Lee Scourfield (Pembroke Dock), Darren Rees (Tenby), Gareth Davies (Crymych), Aled Davies, Lee Glanville (Whitland), Iwan James and Andrew Bowen (Narberth)

Pembrokeshire played Dyfed Powys Police at Carmarthen Park last season. Following that match, it was decided to play the fixture on an annual basis.

County chairman Tony Davies explained: "With the advent of professional rugby, it has become increasingly difficult to arrange friendly fixtures for the county team.

"In our discussions with Police team officials after the match last season, we agreed that it had been an enjoyable game and should be played on a reciprocal annual basis. In addition, the fixture enables the Police team to prepare for the British Police Cup and the Pembrokeshire team to prepare for the Welsh Counties Cup

"Inevitably the success of the county team depends on the availability of players, together with the co-operation and encouragement of clubs in the county."

A number of local businesses have agreed to act as sponsors on the evening and Tony Davies would welcome enquiries from other potential sponsors. He can be contacted on (01437) 764953.

Kick-off is at 7.15 pm and admission is £3.
