The leader of Pembrokeshire County Council has welcomed the announcement that the whole of the county has been included for additional funding under the Communities First programme.

Communities First is a major National Assembly programme aimed at cutting poverty and helping to improve the lives of people who live in the poorest areas.

It will run for at least 10 years and £83m is available to the whole of Wales over the next three years.

Monkton in Pembroke and Llanion in Pembroke Dock have already been identified as areas eligible for Communities First funding.

The National Assembly has since announced that Pembrokeshire is one of 10 authorities in Wales successful in obtaining extra money from the programme thanks to an innovative and inclusive application to work with young disadvantaged people.

"This is excellent news for the county," said Clr. Maurice Hughes, leader of Pembrokeshire County Council.

"What is unique about this additional funding is that the whole of the authority's area is covered by this additional money, although the initial focus will be on the wards of Neyland West, Garth in Haverfordwest and Milford Haven.

"The money will be used to build bridges between funding programmes already in existence. It will offer the opportunity to identify those young people currently not communicating with any programme enabling them to become effective members of society.

"The intention is that these young people will acquire the skills and confidence to positively contribute not only to their community, but Pembrokeshire as a whole."

The county council's head of tourism and regeneration, Erica Fielding, explained that Communities First differed from previous funding programmes in a number of ways.

"One of them is that the communities themselves decide what is needed and are helped to make it happen. It aims to increase the participation of local people.

"Communities First partnerships will include people from the community, community organisations, statutory agencies - such as local and health authorities and the police - and from voluntary organisations and businesses.

"The aim of the Communities First programme is all about making a lasting difference to our disadvantaged communities and this announcement will enable Pembrokeshire to do this."
