As many as 11 musical groups from Pembrokeshire have been selected to play at the prestigious National Festival in London this summer.

School orchestras, bands and chamber ensembles from Sir Thomas Picton School in Haverfordwest, Greenhill School, Tenby and Milford Haven Junior School will have the honour of performing on the national stage at the Royal Festival Hall in July.

At county level, the Pembrokeshire Schools' Orchestra, the Wind Band, the Jazz Ensemble and the Big Band will represent Pembrokeshire alongside the best in Britain.

This will be the first occasion that county groups have participated in the Festival for Music for Youth.

Said Pembrokeshire County Council's music co-ordinator, Chris Llewellyn: "Pembrokeshire has the highest representation of any local authority in Wales.

"This is a reflection of the high standard of schools' music in the county and the commitment and dedication of the music teachers who work in our schools."

The groups were chosen after the regional round of the National Festival of Music for Youth at Sir Thomas Picton School earlier this year.

Contingency plans are now being made to transport and accommodate the 300 pupils who will be in London for the week of July 1 to 6.
