Tenby celebrated the opening of their centenary season with an exciting match against a Pembs. County XV on Bank Holiday Monday, August 28.

Tenby had made a number of changes to their winning team from the Saturday. Both teams were competitive, but it was Pembs. County who settled first and worked a try through Haverfordwest fullback Rob Voil to take a 7-0 lead.

Tenby were soon back on the attack and produced some good lineout work in which hooker Gareth Beavan combined well with Justin Richards at two and Peter James at four or six.

At half-back Gavin Brace and Gavin Scotcher did well and Carl Brodders, who looks a different player this season, was always looking to break. Both Tenby wingers, Dominic Subbiani and Gavin Jones, also were lively and elusive.

The forwards also combined well in the loose, where Paul Brodders, John Stephens and Stu Tyrie were a particularly lively back row.

However, against the run of play, following a clearance kick run back by former Tenby favourite Steve Hartland, the county scored again to increase their lead to 14-0.

Spurred on by a good crowd, Tenby got back to the county 22 and from a period of sustained pressure Lee Tucker was driven over for Scotcher to convert.

This brought the half-time score to Tenby 7 Pembrokeshire County 14.

Playing with the wind in the second half, Tenby opened the brighter and the introduction at various times of Arthur Daye, Richard Rossiter, Sion Brace and Nicky Allen saw the game sswing back and forth

It was, however, the county who went further ahead with a well taken goal, before Tenby struck back with two excellent tries from John Murcott and skipper Neil Truman. Both tries were converted by Gavin Scotcher.

With the scores at 21-21, it was Tenby who forced a penalty for Gavin Scotcher to put them in the lead 24-21.

The county snatched the game in extra-time, however, with a converted try.
