Pembrokeshire Ladies football team, a representative side from the Texaco Pembrokeshire Ladies Football League, recently beat a South Wales representative team 6-0.
The match was played at Sir Thomas Picton School under floodlights, with the Pembrokeshire Ladies emphatically retaining their 100 per cent record against representative sides from within Wales - a winning streak that now goes back six years!
Before kick-off, both teams were presented to Phil Thompson (of sponsors - Texaco), Clr. Leslie Raymond MBE (vice-chair Pembrokshire County Council) and Andy Beaty (FAW national selector).
Pembrokeshire outclassed their opponents with a first half display characterised by neat, fast passing. South Wales had no answer to Laura Roberts' surging forays down the left, neither to the midfield dominance of Jane Lovegrove, Cassie Bennet and Alis Deason. Nicola Aston's speed down the right was also too much for the South Wales defence to handle.
Up front, Marie Davies was in fine form and netted a hat trick. The other goal scorers were Laura Roberts and Jane Lovegrove, with one own goal resulting from a goalmouth scramble.
Pembrokeshire's defence, well organised by Sharon Rodgers in the centre ,was in total control and 'keeper Jo Price was rarely called upon.
At 5-0 to the better, Pembrokeshire eased up in the second half and used the opportunity to ensure all squad members got a game. To their credit, South Wales re-organised and defended well in the second half, with their captain, Debbie Wise, effectively joining the back four as an additional central defender.
For Pembrokeshire, the performance of new, young squad members, including Zoe Jones and Kima Bamford, who came on in the second half, was particularly pleasing and bodes well for the future.
Pembrokeshire squad members included: Laura Roberts, Jane Lovegrove, Marie Davies, Gayle Walden (all Haverfordwest), Alis Deason, Sharon Rodgers, Nerys Jones, Caryl Davies (all Goodwick), Carrie Slack, Nicola Aston, Imelde Rossi, Sally James (all Tenby), Zoe Jones, Kima Bamford (both Neyland), Jo Price (Arsenal/Haverfordwest), Emma Rowell, Lorraine Henton (both Saundersfoot), Laura Richards, Leah Evans (both Carmarthen).
