Division One Haverfordwest have strengthened their grip at the top of the Division One table in the Antur Insurance Services Pembroke County Cricket League following their 10 wickets win over the visitors from Whitland. Haverfordwest skipper Nick Dyer won the toss and invited Whitland to bat. Although Paul Webb with 24 and skipper Mark Lee with 21 gave some of their colleagues a lesson on how to apply themselves, the Whitland team could not get going after being 12 for 3. Pill Kirkby took 3 for 21, David Davies 3 for 12 and Nick Dyer 2 for 11. In contrast, the Haverfordwest openers Danny Potter and Richard James did not look troubled as they proceeded swiftly to a winning total of 93 without loss. Potter hit 11 fours in his innings of 61 not out, mostly on the ground, and Richard James finished on 31 not out. Defending champions St. Ishmaels have moved up into second place after grinding out a draw at home to Carew. Tish reached a total of 231 for 8, with Jonathan Pawlett having a superb innings of 115 which ended when he gave a return catch to Simon Wood. Some of the Carew players described the innings as being something like the way he played in the Harrison-Allen final. Pawlett hit a six and 13 fours and featured in a second wicket partnership of 64 with skipper Peter Bradshaw, who scored 22, and a third wicket partnership of 61 with Stewart Kimpton, who backed up with 33. Other useful knocks were played by Andrew Williams with 22 and Andrew Palmer with 15. Simon Wood, who is having an excellent all-round season, took 4 for 22 and Tim Hicks 2 for 53. Tim Hicks had an attractive innings of 77, including 10 fours, before being bowled by Andrew Salter, Brian Hall played well for his 34, Wayne Cannon and Phil Jones scored 19 each and Barry Evans 17. It was a good game between two of the top teams in the league and one which neither side wanted to risk losing. Carew's innings closed on a total of 208 for 7, with six of the wickets falling to the Salter brothers. Paceman James took 3 for 41 and spinner Andrew 3 for 53. Neyland and Cresselly also fought for ascendancy in a high scoring draw. Batting first, Cresselly scored 234 for 6, with debutant Scott Arthur and Simon Cole putting on 121 valuable runs for the second wicket. Opener Arthur, who replaced his cousin Julian in the team, scored a fine 81, with a six and 11 fours, and the cultured Cole hit two 6s and nine 4s in his knock of 68. All-rounder Ryan Lewis hit some typical lusty blows in his innings of 26 as Henry Durant took 3 for 57 for Neyland and Jeremy Charles 2 for 42. Neyland held out for a draw with a total 212 for 7. Jeremy Charles batting at number three scored 62 and the stylish Paul Murray 51. Their efforts were not wasted as Scott John chipped in with 37 and skipper Andrew Miller with 25. For Cresselly, skipper Lyn Richards took 2 for 32 and the under-used Simon Cole took 2 for 46 with his off-spinners. Over 400 hundred runs were also scored at Lawrenny in a match in which the visitors Llangwm won by four wickets with two balls remaining. Lawrenny scored 203 for 8. Hugh Griffiths was promoted to open the innings as Andrew Cole had telephoned to say that he would be late arriving. Griffiths grasped the opportunity to shine with both hands and hit 17 fours in a well constructed innings of 87 and he added 55 for the third wicket with Christian Phillips who scored 30. James Buckle supported with 26 and Ceri Jones with a brisk 16. Andrew Brock took 5 for 58 for Llangwm, who beat the clock to total 207 fo r6 in reply. William Beresford was close to a century the week before at Whitland, but made it this time with 112 not out in a match-winning innings which included two 6s and 14 fours. His opening partner Jonathan Twigg scored 25 with five 4s and Danny Chesner 23. Ceri Jones was the pick of the Lawrenny bowlers with a spell of 3 for 44. Narberth have made ground at the bottom of the table to close the gap with Lawrenny from 26 to four points. This was achieved after Narberth defeated Burton by three wickets with seven balls of the match remaining. Set to chase 173 all out, Narberth made a determined effort to win, with David Johns scoring 34, Andrew Williams 32 and skipper Richard Adams 19. All-rounder Mathew Johns, shortly to be sidelined with a knee operation, and Ben Quartermaine came together with the total at 141 and required 37 runs to win in mounting tension. The pair managed to do the job, with Johns finishing on 19 not out and Quartermaine on 17 not out. John Scale took 3 for 38 for Burton and Mark Griffiths 2 for 24. Before tea in the Burton innings, Martin James scored 57 with eight 4s and Chris Campbell 45, also including eight 4s. Other useful contributions were made by David Murphy with 19 and James Scale with 18. Ben Quartermaine, Kyle Quartermaine and Ian Hughes each took two wickets for the visitors. Division Two Saundersfoot remain in second place in the table following a big win over the visitors Herbrandston who collapsed to 165 all out after being 147 for 3. Earlier, Saundersfoot reached 249 for 4, with James Caine hitting two 6s and eight 4s in his innings of 84. Steve Cook scored 65, Danny Caine 45 not out from just 23 balls and Simon Stanford 30, including seven 4s, off 22 balls. Kevin Sykes triggered the Herbie collapse with a decisive spell of 7 for 30, supported by Chris Parker with 2 for 8. For Herbie, Jonathan Bennett scored 64, Gary Davies 46 and Nathan Banner 32, but it was all to no avail as seven wickets fell for just 18 runs to give Saundersfoot the points. Pembroke's topsy turvy season continued when they were bowled out for 106 at Johnston in reply to a total of 174 all out. The visitors bowled and fielded well, with Kevin Jenkins taking 3 for 12 and Sean Powell 3 for 25 when Johnston batted. Left-hander Chris Fitzpatrick top scored for the Johnston team with 43. Although Daniel Scourfield scored over half of his team's runs, in a solid knock of 64, he received little support apart from Phillip Hay with 17. Chris Fitzpatrick demonstrated his all-round capabilities by taking 4 for 44. Carew Seconds had a comfortable five wickets win at home over Llanrhian after the visitors were bowled out for 111, the cricketers 'Nelson'. Mathew Bennett scored 57 and Jack Jones 21, but no other batsmen reached double figures. Darren Thomas took 3 for 23 in 12 overs, Nick Cope 3 for 29, Steve Ive 2 for 16 in 11 on the spot overs and Mathew Phillips 2 for 37. The Carew innings did not start well, but Steve Ive and Nick Cope staged a recovery as the two young players added 34 for the fourth wicket, with Ive scoring 23 and then Nick Cope and Darren Thomas combined in a fifth wicket partnership of 40. When Cope was dismissed for 32, Thomas went on to reach 28 not out. Chris Cousins was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 19. Haverfordwest Seconds had a seven wickets win at Fishguard after bowling out the home team for 129. Division Two leaders Hook restricted the visitors from Llechryd to a total of 104 for 9. Hook won the match by seven wickets in the 26th over. Division Three Cresselly Seconds had the better of a drawn match in a local derby against the visitors from Kilgetty. Left-hander Neil Williams just missed out on a century for the Cresselly team as he was bowled by Richard Gwyther after scoring 94 with a six and 14 fours. He added 113 in a second wicket partnership with Nick Davies, who scored 55. Support was provided by opener Julian Arthur ,who had six 4s in his 29, and Jacob Davies with 23. Once again Richard Gwyther was the most penetrative bowler for Kilgetty and took 4 for 35. Kilgetty salvaged a draw with a total of 150 for 7. Anthony Bevan was 30 not out, Richard Gwyther scored 26, Josh Bevan 22 and Grant James a solid 21. Spinner Nick Davies took 3 for 13. Whitland Seconds leapfrogged over Pembroke Dock, Cresselly Seconds and St. Ishmael's Seconds to the second place in the table after winning their home match against Burton Seconds by the big margin of 134 runs. Meyrick Rowlands hit eight 4s in his innings of 71, Nathan Evans supported with 44, Scott Newton with 33 and Carl Stephenson 18 not out. Richard Davies was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors with 3 for 39. Although Davies is in his mid-twenties, this is his first season in Pembrokeshire League cricket. Chasing 208 for 7, the visitors were bowled out for just 74, despite the efforts of Ross Edwards with 25, including five 4s. Surprisingly, there was a high proportion of extras in the total, with 23 being conceded. Nevertheless, the Whitland team were on top as Duane Reynolds took 5 for 21 and Carl Smith 3 for 31. Lamphey won by six wickets away to Camrose and Spittal after dismissing the home team for 80. Opener Rupert Norman top scored with 20, supported by Darren Osborne with 14. Stephen Vale, standing in for the injured Paul White as captain, caused problems for all of the batsmen by taking 5 for 23 in 12 overs and he was supported by spinner Hywel Gibbs who took 4 for 21. Lamphey reached 81 for 4 in reply, with Peter McGilloway making a welcome return to form by scoring 30 not out. Earlier, opener Andrew Skeels scored 22. Malcolm Arnold finished with 2 for 11 for Camrose and Spittal. Jonathan Williams scored 86 in a Hundleton total of 192 for 5 at Pembroke Dock. Skipper Nick Daley took 2 for 26 for the Dock and all-rounder John Davies 2 for 28. Although the Dock batsmen were consistent, they were unable to keep up with the run rate and the innings closed on 158 for 7. John Davies followed up his wickets with a score of 31, Nick Daley scored 22 and John Carmani 33. The evergreen Nigel Arthur, who claims this is his last season, took 3 for 51 and Jonathan Williams 2 for 26. Division Four Manorbier picked up their first league victory of the season with a three wickets win at home to Lawrenny Seconds who reached a total of 139 for 3. Alun Evans was 53 not out with seven 4s and a six, Steve Campbell scored 37 and Steven Cole 28 not out. Paul Oeppen took 2 for 29 for Manorbier, who won the basement battle by reaching a total of 140 for seven. Paul Oeppen followed up his bowling with a fine innings of 64, including 11 fours, Jonathan Hughes hit a six and three 4s in his innings of 27 and Justin Evans was the other batsman in double figures with 13. Teenager Jamie Lewis took 3 for 26 for the visitors. Pembroke Seconds were bowled out for 104 at home to Division Four leaders Crymych, who won by eight wickets upon getting to 107 for 2. Experienced left-hander Hugh Davies top scored for the Pembroke team with 20 and another experienced player Colin Kaijaks backed up with 18. Murray Briggs, who has been in excellent form this season, took 6 for 34 and Dai Jenkins, who has strengthened the bowling attack since joining from Maenclochog at the start of the season, took 2 for 17. Narberth Seconds dismissed the visitors Johnston Seconds for 109 and as a result had five extra overs to knock off the winning runs. The extra overs were needed as Narberth Seconds won by three wickets with nine balls of the match remaining following a sixth wicket partnership of 51 between Gary Hughes, who scored 28, and skipper Chris Richards, who was 21 not out. Brinley Toms was 11 not out at the end with a four and a six and gave the end of the innings the required boost. Mike Johns contributed 22 valuable runs earlier. Richard James took 3 for 15 for the visitors, who had been well placed at 67 for 1, but collapsed as spinner Nick Evans took 4 for 12 and Gary Hughes 4 for 35. Gary Stephens and Steve James opened the batting and scored 36 and 25, respectively, and Chris Goodridge had a useful knock of 18. Division Five Whitland Thirds held on to a draw with a total of 102 for 8 in reply to the 119 for 8 total scored by the visitors, Division Five leaders Hook Seconds. Mathew Holder scored 49 and Nigel Badham 27 for the Hook team as Ashley Evans took 3 for 33, Barry Rees 2 for 19 and Daniel James 2 for 26. Colin John used his experience to lead the Whitland reply with a solid innings of 25 and at the end Ashley Evans was 17 not out and Daniel James 14 not out. Mathew Holder had a good all-round match and took 4 for 27 for the visitors, supported by Chris Holder with 2 for 20. In a good game of cricket at Llechryd, the visitors Carew Thirds were dismissed for 142 in response to a Llechryd total of 166 for 9. A third wicket partnership of 119 between Steve Welch and Ronnie Ratcliffe enabled Llechryd Seconds to recover from a poor start of 15 for 2. Welch scored 23 with seven 4s and Ratcliffe 43. Fifteen-year-old Dominic Hicks took 5 for 42 for the visitors and Rob Whitfield 2 for 27. When the visitors replied, Haydn Shapcott scored 35, Gethin Evans 30, Chris Cole 24 and Darren Rees 15. Malcolm McHugh took 5 for 23 and John Quinney 3 for 31. Narberth's Thirds lost by five wickets away to Burton Thirds despite totalling 185 for 8. Sixteen-year-old Nathan Lloyd top scored for Narberth with 68, an innings which included three 6s and eight 4s, supported by another teenager, Owen Richards, with 44 and club chairman Huw Simpkins with 28. Brian Griffiths took 3 for 39 for Burton Thirds, who had a winning total of 186 for 5. This was largely due to a second wicket partnership of 118 between Andrew Cromwell, who scored 80 with four 6s and 11 fours, together with Ian Woods, who scored 64. Elaine Scale was the other batsman in double figures with 16. Geraint Nicholas took 2 for 37 for the visitors. At the ground which both teams share, Cresselly Thirds had a six wickets win at home to St Florence, who were bowled out for 96. Skipper Steve Wilkins scored 22, Ben McDonnell 16 and Peter Hall 10. Iwan Izzard took 4 for 9 and Steve Davies 4 for 14 for the Cresselly team. Nick Jones led the run chase with 34 and Steve Davies chipped in with 27 not out in a total of 97 for 4, supported by Alex Bayley with 17. Division Six Saundersfoot Seconds continue to lead the Division Six table following a big win away to Lamphey Seconds, who were bowled out for 67 in response to a Saundersfoot total of 191 for 7. Yannick Parker scored 81 not out with four 4s and two 6s for the Saundersfoot team, backed up by Chris Hawkes with 29 and Grant Hardy with 20. Chris Forth took 4 for 46 and Maldwyn Llewellyn took 2 for 36. Teenager Lewis Haines carried the Lamphey innings almost single-handed and top scored with 32, but no other batsman reached double figures as Andrew Evans took 4 for 15, Ian Butler 3 for 19 and Yannick Parker 2 for 7. Kilgetty Seconds have moved off the bottom of the table after their first win of the season. Despite being bowled out for 107 at home to Pembroke Dock Seconds, the Kilgetty bowlers and fielders came up trumps to dismiss the visitors for 71 and notch up a victory by 36 runs. The Dock batsmen floundered as Rob Beynon took 3 for 9, Jamie Morgan 3 for 14 and Barry Ormond 2 for 9. John Moseley was the exception to the rule in his fighting innings of 22 not out. Earlier, Rob Beynon top scored for the Kilgetty team with 58, with the main support being provided by Stuart Allen with 14. Luke Murray took 4 for 36 for the Dock and Andrew Wood 3 for 30. Hundleton Seconds went down by nine wickets at home to Llangwm Thirds after being dismissed for a modest total of 56. Daniel Hughes took 6 for 27 for the visitors as Carl John offered the chief resistance with 26. Llangwm Thirds had no trouble in reaching a winning score of 57 for one, with Lyn Rees 26 not out.
