Division One
Pembrokeshire's top four teams from the 2007 season were involved in two of the matches in the opening week's campaign. Defending champions St Ishmaels will still be the team to beat this season and Tish totalled 177 for seven at home to Cresselly. Skipper Peter Bradshaw and teenage prodigy Andrew Salter gave the defending champions a solid start in a first wicket partnership of 60. Salter hit one six and three fours before being stumped by Neilson Cole off the bowling of Richard Harris for 37 and Bradshaw had earlier been caught by Ryan Lewis off the bowling of Cresselly's skipper Lyn Richards for 29. Jonathan Pawlett continued where he left off last season with a fine innings of 57 and Andrew Palmer was 38 not out. Spinner Ryan Lewis was the most penetrative of the Cresselly bowlers and finished with figures of four for 41 with other wickets falling to Richard Harris, Lyn Richards and Simon Cole. Cresselly salvaged a draw with a total of 150 for nine to prevent Tish from winning. Julian Arthur top scored with 37 before being caught by Andrew Palmer off the bowling of Andrew Salter and his brother Damian provided support with 24 before he was also dismissed by Salter. Simon Cole with 19, Phil Williams with 13 and Rhydian Rees with 12 chipped in and Ryan Lewis had a brisk innings of 27. Spinner Andrew Salter took four for 31, James Salter two for 32 and Andrew Palmer two for 34. The match at the Racecourse, Haverfordwest was a low scoring affair with the ball on top of bat for most of the afternoon in a match where only three batsmen reached double figures. Haverfordwest batted first and were bowled out for the meagre total of 99 following excellent bowling by Simon Wood who took five for 25 with his accurate swing bowling, Tim Hicks took two for 21 and Darren Thomas two for 36. Opener Danny Potter scored 38 before being caught by Phil Jones at extra cover off the bowling of Wood and David Davies was the other batsman in double figures with 16. Carew had all the time in the world to get a winning total of 100 but found it difficult to score runs and keep their wickets intact. Nick Scourfield was the only batsman to stand above the parapet with a dogged innings of 63 not out in 52 overs. No other Carew batsman could reach double figures and the match ended with Carew two runs short of victory settling for a draw on a total of 98 for seven. David Davies took three for 18, Stephen Phillips two for 29 and skipper Nick Dyer one for 11 for Haverfordwest. Burton just managed to avoid relegation from Division One last season and were up against it in their match against Neyland being dismissed for 96 in response to a Neyland total of 148 or eight. The experienced Phil Sutton top scored for Neyland with 28 supported by Paul Murray with 26 and Nick Kooman with 24 not out. Spinner James Venables took three for 48 and Mark Griffiths two for 27. Apart from Martin James with 25 and Gareth Bevan with 23, the Burton batsmen found life hard going although Will Scriven did get into double figures with 11. The Neyland bowlers always had the upper hand as Andrew Miller took three for 11, spinner Gary Lloyd two for 15 and Patrick Hannon two for 29. Whitland are on top of Division One after defeating Lawrenny by 33 runs. Whitland totalled 140 for seven and were given an ideal start in a first wicket partnership of 51 between David Lee who scored 15 and teenager Jonathan Thomas who scored 14. All rounder Mathew Davies had a breezy knock of 31 whilst for Lawrenny Simon Webb took three for 34 and Simon Cole two for 25. Hugh Griffiths did his best to hold the Lawrenny innings together with a determined innings of 27 but only had meaningful support from Simon Cole with 23 including five fours and skipper Steve Lewis with 19, an innings which included four fours. Whitland rugby player Raff Williams did the early damage by taking the first three wickets to fall for 18 runs. Mathew Davies followed up his batting to take two for 26, spinner Paul Webb had a match winning spell of four for 14 as Lawrenny were bowled out for 107. Narberth had the better of a drawn game at home to Llangwm and as a result are in second position in the league table. Although three of the first five batsmen reached double figures Narberth were at one time 57 for five. Opener Andrew Williams and Kyle Quartermaine both scored 18 and skipper Richard Adams reached 17 before being stumped by William Beresford off the bowling of Llangwm skipper Andrew Harris. However all rounders Ben Quartermaine and Ian Hughes featured in a partnership of 63 for the sixth wicket which was broken when Ian Hughes was bowled by Darren Brick for 38 after hitting two sixes and four fours. Ben Quartermaine was undefeated at the end with an excellent innings of 40 not out which included three sixes and one four. Llangwm bowled tidily with Andrew Brock taking two for 29 from ten overs and other wickets falling to Andrew Harris, Chris Inward and Darren Brick. Llangwm reached 125 for nine in reply to Narberth's total of 152 for seven, with Chris Inward being bowled by Ben Hughes off the last ball of the match. Llangwm also made an indifferent start and were 40 for five with only two batsmen Gary Phillips with 17 and Jonathon Twigg with 12 in double figures. Skipper Andrew Harris scored 18 before being caught and bowled by left arm spinner Ian Hughes. Ian Phillips top scored with 35 before being bowled by Richard Howell and Darren Brick had an attacking innings of 25 from just 18 deliveries, five of which were hit for four. Ben Quartermaine showed his quality with a bowling spell of three for 26 from 12 overs, Ian Hughes ended with figures of two for 32 and Ben Hughes took two for 51. Richard Howell kept one end tied up as he took one for 15 from ten overs.
Division Two
Saundersfoot had a winning start to the season with an eight wickets win over Pembroke who were dismissed for 121. Kevin Sykes had a match winning spell of four for 19 backed up by Steve Cole with two for eight and David Dunfee with two for 23. All rounder Gwyn Griffiths tried to hold the innings together in a fighting knock of 39 before he was bowled by Steve Cole. Simon Smith-Wrench scored 16 and L Butler batting at number ten boosted the total in his knock of 23. Openers Danny Cane and Simon Stanford gave Saundersfoot an excellent start in their first wicket partnership of 78 from just 16 overs. Stanford hit five fours in his innings of 44 and Cane one six and three fours as he scored 35. On their departure Paul Mansbridge with 16 not out and James Cane with 14 not out took Saundersfoot to a winning total of 122 for two. Carew had the better of the battle between the only two clubs with second teams in Division Two. The visitors Haverfordwest Seconds were bowled out for 89 in response to a Carew total of 142 for five. Opener Tom Davies had a solid innings of 34, the evergreen Gerald Hicks top scored with 44 and Mathew Phillips reached 42 not out in the Carew total. For the visitors Dean Flood took two for 29 and Simon Tremaine two for 47. Experienced opening batsman Andrew Phillips led the way for Haverfordwest in his innings of 28 but lacked support to challenge the Carew total as the only other batsman in double figures was Mark Cross with 16. All rounder Aled Davies rolled back the years to take seven for 16 from his ten overs with Neil Gregory, Nick Cope and spinner Ceri Brace each picking up one wicket. In other Division Two matches Hook defeated Fishguard by 159 runs and Johnston won by 96 runs at home to Llanrhian. The match between Llechryd and Herbrandston was one of a number of matches called off on Saturday because of wet pitches.
Division Three
Cresselly Seconds had an eight wickets win at home to St Ishmaels Seconds who were dismissed for 100. Skipper Richard Arthur ripped through the Tish batting line-up with a five for 30 spell supported by left arm seamer Mathew Lewis who took three for 24. Michael Cockburn with 33 and Liam Duffield with 17 were the main contributors to the Tish total. Excellent batting by Scott Arthur with 54 not out and Nick Davies with 35 not out took the Cresselly team to a winning total of 103 for two. Pembroke Dock were bowled out for 54 at home to Camrose and Spittal who won by eight wickets. The Dock batsmen had problems facing David Crane with four for nine and Phil Rees with four for 15. Two clubs relegated from Division Two last season Stackpole and Lamphey met on Saturday and Stackpole ended up as comfortable winners. Huw Cox scored 112 not out from just 103 deliveries to notch up his maiden century. He batted well to get on top of the Lamphey bowling and hit five sixes and ten fours in his innings and he received excellent support from Richard McKay with 51 not out. Spinner Hywel Gibbs took the only wicket for the Lamphey team who were bowled out for 145 in reply to the Stackpole total of 194 for one. Middle order batsman Jason Oatley had an outside chance of leading Lamphey to victory until he was caught by Alan Webster off the bowling of Simon Bevan for 62 having hit two sixes and seven fours. Lamphey skipper Paul White played well until he gave a return catch to Alan Webster after scoring 33. Alan Webster finished with four for 46, Simon Bevan with three for two and Anthony Canton two for 39. No play was possible in the Match between Whitland Seconds and Kilgetty.
Division Four
Narberth Seconds travelled to Llangwm who were bowled out for 108 by Llangwm Seconds. J Palmer caused most of the damage in his spell of five for 37 from 12 overs. A second wicket partnership of 73 between Alastair Platten and Paul Morgan gave Llangwm Seconds a nine wickets win. Platten scored 47 not out with three sixes and two fours and Morgan 31 not out. Andrew Cromwell was the other batsman in double figures with 12. The local derby between Whitland Thirds and Narberth Thirds at Llanddewi Velfrey was another victim of a wet pitch. Hundleton Seconds travelled to Crymych and had a good start when Crymych Seconds were seven for three. The home team recovered as Guto Davies scored 67 with six sixes and his brother Huw scored 40 with three sixes. As a result the Crymych bowlers had a total of 160 to defend before the Crymych team were dismissed. Hundleton Seconds were bowled out for 55 despite the efforts of Nick Hayward with 43. Huw Davies followed up his batting to take four for three for Crymych Seconds. The match was sponsored by Ann Youngman of the Angel Llandissilio.
