Division One
Although 18 of the 31 scheduled matches could not be played because of heavy rain during the week, all of the matches in Division One were played to a conclusion. Cresselly's win in the match of the day against Haverfordwest has taken the village club to the top of the Division One table on 104 points, followed by Lawrenny just one point behind, Carew on 96 points and Haverfordwest on 84 points. Haverfordwest found that it was necessary to graft for runs at Cresselly in a match reduced to 40 overs per side because of a delayed start. Danny Potter and Richard James got their heads down in an opening partnership of 51, which ended when Potter was caught by Simon Cole off the bowling of Huw Neale. The lively right arm pace bowler also dismissed James with a stunning caught and bowled catch for 29. The main contributions amongst the remainder of the Haverfordwest batsmen came from David Davies with 23 and Nick Dyer with a brisk innings of 26. Huw Neale ended with figures of 2 for 33, Richard Harris and Lyn Richards both bowled economically, with Harris taking 2 for 30 and Richards 2 for 35. Ryan Lewis picked up the other wicket to fall. Cresselly made a rather shaky start against the makeshift Haverfordwest opening attack of Phil Kirkby and David Davies. Julian Arthur was caught behind by Huw Scriven off the bowling of Kirkby without scoring and Harris was also bowled by Kirkby for nine. Simon Cole and Adam Chandler then set about restoring the situation, but Chandler was bowled by David Davies for 16 with the total on 47 and seven runs later Cole was trapped with his pads in front by Davies for 23. At 54 for 4, Cresselly were in a spot of bother, but Richard Harris set about rebuilding the Cresselly innings, as he has done so often before, this time in tandem with Phil Williams. The pair had a decisive fifth wicket partnership of 60 runs, which put Cresselly within touching distance of the Haverfordwest total. Williams had scored a quality 32 before he was bowled by Town skipper Adrian Griffiths which brought all-rounder Ryan Lewis to the crease. He scored 19 not out from just 13 balls with two 6s, one of which was a huge effort over long-on to level the scores. Apart from these trademark gung ho shots, there were also signs that Lewis is beginning to put as much thought into his batting as he does with his bowling. Interspersed with the two big shots were weighted shots between the gaps from which the batsmen could take two runs and he ended the match with a delicate dab towards third man to score the winning run. Harris played a match-winning innings of 34 not out and put the bad ball away to good effect by hitting five 4s altogether. Cresselly passed Haverfordwest's total of 140 for 7 for the loss of five wickets and it is clear that the title race will produce some more enthralling cricket before the season is out. David Davies took 2 for 33 in a good bowling spell to repay the trust showed in him by Adrian Griffiths and Kirkby took 2 for 34. Neyland continue to struggle and are now firmly rooted at the bottom of table with 19 points. Admittedly in difficult batting conditions at St. Ishmaels, the visitors Neyland were bowled out for 35 in the 28th over. Nick Kooman top scored on 16 as Andrew Williams took 4 for 4, opening bowler James Salter 2 for 7, his younger brother Andrew took 2 for 17 with his spinners and another off-spinner Daniel Flynn took 2 for 6. Tish had a comfortable nine wickets win in the 10th over. James Salter was caught by Paul Murray off the bowling of Phil Davies with the total on one, but then Jonathan Pawlett with 17 not out and Stuart Kimpton with 20 not out got the winning runs. Carew proved to be too strong for Burton as the visitors struggled to contain the free-scoring Carew batsmen. Carew's total of 213 for 6 was the highest of the day. Openers Ian Sefton and Nick Scourfield paved the way with yet another half century first wicket stand, this time of 84. It ended when Scourfield was caught by 'keeper William Scriven off the bowling of James Venables for 28. Sefton went on to score 67, with four 6s and seven 4s, before he was caught behind by Scriven off the bowling of John Venables. The good work was continued by Simon Wood and Tim Hicks in a fourth wicket stand of 75. Wood scored 49 with five 4s and a six and Hicks scored 30 with three 6s and a four. Phil Jones was 14 not out at the end. For Burton, Mark Griffiths took 2 for 39 and the experienced Steve Jones 2 for 51. Although Burton battled hard, they had no answers to the questions asked so often by the Carew bowlers and were dismissed for 88. Skipper Mike Venables had a back to the wall innings of 30 after opening the batting before he was caught by Ian Sefton off the bowling of Carew skipper Rob Sefton. Will Scriven scored 15, Chris Campbell 13 and David Murphy 11. Tim Hicks took 4 for 13 in his 12 overs and got a lot of bounce off the track, as did Darren Thomas who took 2 for 24. There was no respite for the Burton batsmen after Hicks and Thomas had finished their spells as Rob Scourfield took 2 for 14 and Wayne Cannon 2 for 17. Pembroke had their first win of the season at the expense of Narberth who were restricted to a total of 121 for 7. Narberth openers Andrew Williams and skipper Marc Hughes put on 41 for the first wicket, before Hughes was caught by Phil Stephens off the bowling of Kevin Jenkins for 29. Williams perished with the total on 56 after he was caught by Kevin Jenkins off the bowling of Rob Weston for 15, but by this time, Richard Adams had started to anchor the Narberth innings. He had little support from the middle order, but Ollie Cook chipped in with 12 and later Ben Quartermaine scored 13 not out. Adams was 31 not out at the end of the innings from a patient vigil at the crease. For Pembroke, Rob Weston took 2 for 29 and spinner Chris Thomas 2 for 27. The visitors had a comfortable six wickets win in the 35th over. Phil Stephens had a match winning innings of 67 not out in 86 deliveries and found time to hit seven 4s and two 6s. Will Davies gave him support in a second wicket partnership of 36, before Davies was caught by Richard Adams off the bowling of Matthew Johns for 13. Later on in the innings, Daniel Scourfield raised the tempo by scoring 23 runs in just 20 balls, with three 4s and a six, and Rob Weston was 12 not out at the end. Weston and Stephens had added 32 in an unbroken fifth wicket partnership. Spinner Matthew Johns took 2 for 43 for Narberth and opening bowler Ollie Cook had the best economy rate, conceding just nine runs in his eight overs. In the match at Lawrenny, it looked as if the Division One pace-setters might suffer their first defeat of the season. Whitland were chasing a Lawrenny total of 189 all out and when the last over started, Whitland required six runs to win with six wickets left. All-rounder Steve Lewis did Lawrenny proud as he took two wickets and restricted the visitors to just two runs. Earlier, when Lawrenny batted, James Buckle laid the platform for the Lawrenny total in an accomplished innings of 45, but when Whitland began to get back into the game, Hugh Griffiths and Ceri Jones had an important seventh wicket partnership of exactly 50. Hugh Griffiths held things together with his innings of 38 and Ceri Jones hit the ball all around the park and hit five 6s in total, four of which came off Whitland's skipper Paul Webb. Iestyn Scourfield took 2 for 29 and there was one wicket each for Meyrick Rowlands, Paul Webb and Bobby Webb, who took 1 for 23 in his 12 overs. Matthew Davies picked up 2 for 32 and Paul Davies bowled right at the end of the Lawrenny innings to take 3 for 12 in his two overs as Lawrenny went for the runs. Whitland were well on course for victory with two top quality left-handers Paul Webb and Paul Davies at the crease. Both batsmen scored 66 in a second wicket partnership of 136. Unfortunately for the visitors, both fell in the same over, which was the 40th over of the match. Davies had hit six 4s and five 6s, but going for another boundary he was caught by Steve Lewis at mid-wicket off the bowling of Simon Cole. Off the very next ball, Webb, who had hit six 4s and two 6s, hit a lofted off drive and was caught at long-off by Ian Jenkins to put Cole on a hat-trick. Kevin Pearce had the only other innings in double figures with 13 not out. Simon Cole took 3 for 29 and cool-hand Lewis ended with 3 for 46 after taking the responsibility of bowling the last over. Ceri Jones and Alun Evans also played their part in preventing Whitland from winning.
Division Two
Saundersfoot were missing a lot of first team regulars who are out in Spain to celebrate Steve Cole's forthcoming nuptials. The Saundersfoot team paid the penalty of fielding a weakened side against Haverfordwest Seconds, being bowled out for 66. Mike Franklin top scored with 25, supported by Yannick Parker and Steve Cook, both of whom scored 12. Nigel Delaney took 4 for 17 in 12 overs, Dean Flood took 2 for 8 and Chris Phillips took 2 for 25. The visitors could only take one wicket as Haverfordwest Seconds raced to a winning total of 67 for 1 in the 15th over. Adam Raymond had scored 42 in the first wicket partnership of 66 before he was caught by David Dunfee off the bowling of Grant Hardy. His opening partner Andrew Phillips was 18 not out. Only one other match was played in Division Two and Carew Seconds where bowled out for 74 at Llangwm. Ben Evans scored 22, with Steve Ive, Gethin Evans and Tom Davies being the only other batsmen in double figures with 11 runs each. Adrian Harries did the damage for Llangwm with 5 for 28, supported by Jonathan Palmer with 3 for 14. Gary Phillips maintained his fine form with an innings of 37, which included five 4s and a six, and was the only batsman in double figures. Steve Ive and Nick Cope had a wicket each and young leg spinner Ceri Brace took 2 for 20.
Division Three
Only one match was played in Division Three where Narberth Seconds were involved in a tense finish away to Camrose and Spittal. The visitors travelled with just 10 men, so when Gary Hughes and Richard Howell were together at the crease the visitors needed 10 to win to overtake the Camrose and Spittal total of 61 all out. The two old hands got the necessary runs, but if one of them had been out, it was effectively the last wicket stand and Camrose and Spittal would have won. Howell settled the nerves in the Narberth camp by hitting a four over mid-off for the visitors to win the match by two wickets. Aron Keane scored 33 for the Narberth team to dominate the batting and for Camrose and Spittal, David Crane took 3 for 15, Malcolm Arnold 3 for 20 and Darren Osborne 2 for 17. Earlier, only two Camrose and Spittal batsmen reached double figures, with Mat Williams scoring 23 and the experienced David Isaacs scoring 10. Richard Howell was in superb form as he tied the batsmen up with his accurate seam bowling and took wickets at the same time. He had a deserved haul of 6 for 11 and received support from skipper Gary Hughes with 2 for 17 and Aron Keane with 2 for 18.
Division Four
Pembroke Dock had the better of a drawn game at home to Manorbier and have narrowed the gap between the two teams who lie in third and second position, respectively, in the league table. All-rounder John Davies and his opening partner Steve Hartley were in commanding form and the pair put on 147 for the first wicket. Davies scored 55 with four 4s and Hartley reached his first 50 for the Dock team before eventually being dismissed after a fine innings of 81 with six 4s. Neil Powling was the pick of the Manorbier bowlers and took 5 for 51. Manorbier held out for a draw on a total of 101 for 9. Mark Meyrick scored 30 with two 6s and two 4s, backed up by Mike May with 25. For the Dock, Neil Hallett had a very good spell of 3 for 16 in 11 overs and spinner Jason Coles took 3 for 36.
