After a complete wash-out in the Imperial Garage Pembroke County Cricket League on Saturday, only a handful of league matches were unable to be played on Bank Holiday Monday as the weather was more favourable, although a little cold at times for umpires, scorers and spectators.
Division One
Carew kept in touch with Division One leaders Haverfordwest with a win at Lawrenny with only two balls of the match left. The visitors totalled 106 for 6, with opener Nick Scourfield scoring an excellent 96 before being caught by Robert Williams off the bowling of part- time bowler Christian Phillips. Scourfield, who accumulated runs steadily throughout the afternoon, was not too disappointed at missing out on the century and on being questioned after the match said that he would have settled for a score of 96 at 1.45pm. He featured in a second wicket partnership of 92 with Brian Hall, who scored 35, and earlier an opening stand of 66 with Ian Sefton, who scored 22. Phillips ended with figures of 3 for 15 in his three overs. The early Lawrenny batsmen were unable to make much impression against a strong Carew bowling attack as Simon Wood took 3 for 11 in 12 overs and Tim Hicks 3 for 26 in his 12 overs. Lawrenny skipper Steve Lewis, batting at number seven, played a captain's innings of 32 and the only other batsmen in double figures were Barry Phillips with 19 and Hugh Griffiths with 10. With Ben Cole and Phil Cole at the crease, it looked as if Lawrenny would survive, but Ben Jones fell to a catch by Phil Jones off the bowling of Aled Davies as Lawrenny were bowled out for 115. Aled Davies finished with figures of 2 for 5. Cresselly had a comfortable win at Whitland after reaching a total of 153 for 9 in a workman-like batting approach. Simon Cole scored 32 before giving a return catch to Mark Lee and Adam Chandler reached 29 and the pair put on 54 for the third wicket. Skipper Lyn Richards with 15, Julian Arthur with 13 and Damian Arthur with 12 played supporting roles. Mark Lee took 3 for 31 and spin twins Meyrick Rowlands and Paul Webb took 3 for 26 and 2 for 38, respectively. David Lee batted well for Whitland before being caught by Damian Arthur with a spectacular boundary catch at long on off the bowling of Hugh Neale when on 27. Edward John chipped in with 19 and Heflin Thomas had a quickfire knock of 15. Richard Harris was on the spot in his 4 for 23 spell, backed up by Hugh Neale with 3 for 30 and Lyn Richards with 2 for 12. The Pembroke batsmen found life difficult at Haverfordwest and were 8 for 5 at one time, before having a partial recovery to reach 58 before being dismissed. All-rounder Kevin Jenkins scored 18, supported by another experienced cricketer, Hugh Davies, who scored 15. There were three run-outs in the Pembroke innings, while spinner Nick Dyer took 3 for 20 and Phil Kirkby 2 for 10. Haverfordwest knocked off the runs without loss on reaching 62 in the 23rd over. David Davies was 32 not out and Andrew Phillips 19 not out. St. Ishmaels were held to a total of 120 for 9 away to Hook. Skipper Peter Bradshaw scored 42 before being run out by Ben Field and Chris Wilson, batting at number nine, scored 20 not out. Earlier, all- rounder Andrew Williams scored 19 before being leg before wicket to Keith James, who ended with 3 for 46, with Jamie Phelps and Mathew Holder both picking up two wickets each. Hook collapsed as Andrew Palmer took the first four wickets to fall to finish with figures of 4 for 15, supported by spinner Daniel Flynn with 3 for 3 and Andrew Williams with 3 for 8. Keith James did his best to delay the inevitable and scored 23 before being bowled by Andrew Williams, with Ben Field the only other batsman in double figures with 10. Narberth have moved three places up the Division One table with an emphatic nine wickets win at Neyland after bowling out the home team for 79. Wicket-keeper Sean Hannon and Henry Durant had a last wicket partnership of 43 to take the total from 36 for nine to 79 all out. Hannon was 19 not out and Durant scored 21 before being bowled by Richard Howell, who finished with figures of 3 for 12 in 11.4 overs. Earlier, Ollie Cook and Ben Hughes had destroyed the Neyland innings by removing the first seven batsmen cheaply, with Hughes taking 4 for 15 in 12 overs and Cook 3 for 22. When Tom Richards was bowled by John Jones with the total on one, it looked as if Narberth might also struggle. However, skipper Marc Hughes and Richard Adams had other ideas as they steered the visitors to victory in their second wicket partnership of 79. Hughes scored a solid 48 from 93 deliveries, including four 4s, and Adams 23.
Division Two
Division Two leaders Haverfordwest Seconds won by four wickets at Saundersfoot after holding the home team to a total of 122 for 8. Steve Cole top scored for Saundersfoot with 42, including six 4s, supported by Paul Mansbridge with 29 and David Parcell with 18. Haverfordwest Seconds have a first division bowling attack in the form of spinners Clive Tucker and Mathew Johns. Both played regularly in the first team last season and Tucker took 4 for 36, with Johns taking 3 for 19. The visitors did not have it all their own way as Kevin Sykes took four for 31 for Saundersfoot. Four Haverfordwest batsmen reached 20 or more to take the total to 125 for 6. Veteran Steve James continued to have a good season with 25 not out, Nigel Delaney also scored 25, with Adam James reaching 23 and Mathew Johns 20. Stackpole were bowled out for 133 at home to Lamphey. Alan Webster profited from some Lamphey fielding errors to reach 59 not out with four 4s and two 6s. Other useful contributions came from Hugh Cox with 28 and Richard MacKay, who was run out for 22 when out of his ground after a direct hit from Alan Webster, the batsman at the other end, was deflected on to his stumps. For Lamphey, Grant Cole took 4 for 24 and spinner Paul White 2 for 45. Lamphey were made to pay for dropping six catches and were dismissed for 92. Richard MacKay did the early damage, bowling both openers for four each. At one time, Lamphey were 15 for 4, but a fifth wicket partnership of 51 between Nick Shelmerdine and Rizwan Hassan helped the visitors to a total of 92 before being dismissed. Shelmerdine scored 33 before being caught by Andrew Jenkins off the bowling of Alan Webster, Hassan scored 16 and Haydn Cole 16 not out. MacKay ended with figures of 5 for 34 and Alan Webster picked up wickets at the other end to finish with figures of 4 for 11. All three Carew teams had exciting finishes and Carew Seconds had a narrow one wicket win with two balls of the match remaining at home to Johnston. The visitors reached 118 for 8, thanks mainly to openers Chris Fitzpatrick with 45 and John Summons with 18. Mathew Phillips took 5 for 33 in 10 overs and all- rounder Darren Thomas 2 for 18. Thomas featured in a match-winning last wicket partnership of 18 with Kerry Waters and was 29 not out at the end. Earlier Adrian Harries on his return to Carew from Lawrenny opened the innings to score 34 and Mathew Phillips had a useful 19. For Johnston, Lee Summons took 3 for 21 and Chris Fitzpatrick 3 for 42. In other Division Two matches, Llanrhian had a five wickets win at home to Herbrandston, who were dismissed for 79, and Llangwm held on to a draw at 132 for 7, replying to a Burton total of 185 for 8.
Division Three
Whitland Seconds have their eyes on promotion and won by seven wickets away to Manorbier. On a low slow wicket with variable bounce, Whitland's young bowling attack proved too much for the Manorbier batsmen. Skipper Mike May was the only batsman in double figures with 12 as Manorbier were bowled out for 43 in 20 overs. Daniel Newtown took 4 for 11 in six overs and Simon Davies 2 for 11 and Manorbier's batsmen had problems running between the wickets so that two run-outs did not help the cause. Phil Kidney struck twice in the first three overs as the visitors replied to offer a glimmer of hope. However, Whitland's middle order batsmen settled in and eventually killed off Manorbier's hopes of a dramatic turn around. Kevin Pearce was 20 not out and Mathew Davies 14 not out as the visitors reached a winning total of 44 for 3. Phil Kidney finished with figures of 2 for 19. Hundleton had the better of a drawn game at home to Fishguard after totalling 170 for 9. Morgan Allen scored 42, supported by John Tysoe with 20, Dave Bevington with 19 and Jonathan Williams with 18. For the visitors, Ben Watson took 3 for 33, Gary Strawbridge 2 for 15 and Rob Couzens 2 for 23. Jonathan Strawbridge, with an excellent innings of 58 not out, was the mainstay in Fishguard's reply. He received support from Rob Couzens with 21 in a total of 120 for 8. For Hundleton, Richard Allen took 3 for 27, Dave Bevington 2 for 21 and Riaan Strydon 2 for 17. Narberth Seconds were bowled out for exactly 100 at home to Neyland Seconds, but still won the match by 55 runs! Opener Andrew Williams had a solid knock of 39, supported by Mike Scale with 26 not out as Peter Burton took 4 for 10, supported by Mike Tennick with three wickets. Both bowlers caused problems for the Narberth batsmen, until Scale, a late arrival, stroked the ball around the park. In reply, excellent bowling by the Narberth team resulted in the visitors Neyland Seconds being dismissed for 45. Paul Miller top scored with 18, but spinner Daniel Hughes with 3 for 8 and Rob Gaskell with two wickets did the early damage, before skipper Gary Hughes destroyed the lower order in a 4 for 3 spell.
Division Four
Division Four leaders Pembroke Dock were bowled out for 138 at home to Crymych. All-rounder John Davies top scored with 55, an innings which included nine 4s, supported by Julian Edwards with 13. For the visitors, Eurig Lewis took 3 for 21, Lee Pearce 2 for 20 and Mallary Stanford 2 for 33. Lewis was also on form with the bat. His innings of 40 helped Crymych settle for a draw on a total of 116 for 8. David Deardon scored 19 in support. John Davies followed up his batting to take 4 for 21 and John Coles 2 for 20 with his medium paced deliveries. At the other end of the table, Lamphey Seconds continue to struggle and were bowled out for 61 at home to Lawrenny Seconds. Jason Griffiths scored half of his teams runs with his innings of 30. For the visitors, teenager Brad Jenkins took 4 for 8 with his medium paced deliveries, supported by Willie Morris with 3 for 11 and John Fuller with 2 for 33. Lawrenny Seconds had a comfortable 10 wickets win, with Steve Campbell 27 not out and John Fuller 23 not out. Cresselly Seconds are just one point behind the Dock in second place after totalling 221 for 8 at home to Kilgetty. Opener Scott Arthur scored 25, before being caught by Jake Marsh off the bowling of Brian Slate, and Steve Davies scored 29, with other useful runs coming from Jimmy Kinnear with 23 and Steve Thomas with 17. However, the innings of the day belonged to Mathew Lewis, who scored 70 not out from 36 deliveries, an exhilarating knock which included three 6s and seven 4s. He had his fair share of luck, being dropped after scoring just four and was dropped on two more occasions. He put the game out of reach of the visitors, especially after Kilgetty skipper Graham Jenkins was caught by Simon Clark off the bowling of Steve Thomas for 19. The Kilgetty innings closed on a total of 92 for 5, with Richard Prout 19 not out backed up by Jamie Morgan, with 14. Steven Thomas finished with figures of 2 for 5 for the Cresselly team. Pembroke Seconds held on for a draw at home to Llangwm Seconds and reached a total of 134 for 5 in response to the Llangwm total of 154 for 8. Tim Gould had a solid innings of 73 and received support from Gwyn Griffiths with 18. Gareth Bevan took 2 for 26 for the visitors. Prior to the tea interval, Paul Morgan with 43 and Luke Brock with 28 were the pick of the Llangwm batsmen as Stuart Longhurst took 3 for 52 for the Pembroke team.
Division Five
St. Florence picked up their third win of the season, this time at the expense of Stackpole Seconds, who had been held to 102 for 9. Josh Davies with 52 scored the bulk of the runs for the visitors in an innings which included two 6s and three 4s, with two other batsmen, Joshi and Haywood, chipping in with 12 apiece. Peter Hall led the St. Florence victory bid with his fine innings of 50, which included six 4s, supported by Ben MacDonnell with 24. The pair had a second wicket partnership of 71. Richard Jones had a useful contribution of 17 as St. Florence won by five wickets, despite the efforts of Phil Tallett who took 2 for 2. Wickets fell quickly at Llanddewi Velfrey, where Whitland Thirds were at home to Llanrhian Seconds. Colin Reynolds scored 30, but the visitors were still bowled out for 59, as Alan Proctor took 4 for 12 an Ashley Evans 3 for 14. Gwyn Phillips was the only Whitland batsman to reach double figures in his innings of 20, but it was enough to guide Whitland to a winning total of 60 for 6 as Mike Robb took 3 for 21. In another low scoring match at Johnston, excellent bowling by Gareth Brace, of Carew Thirds, who took 5 for 4, including a hat-trick, and Tom Davies, with 2 for 10, reduced Johnston Seconds to a total of 54 all out. In the third exciting finish of the day for the Carew club, the visitors won by just one wicket. The total was on 50 for 9, but a six by Russell Knox took Carew Thirds to victory and Knox to a total of 40 not out.
Division Six
In Division Six, continued highway drainage problems at the Kilgetty ground and a sodden outfield prevented Kilgetty Seconds playing Llanrhian Thirds and there was also a wet pitch at Fishguard which prevented Hundleton Seconds from playing Fishguard Seconds. Saundersfoot Seconds travelled to Haverfordwest and made a good start, with Haverfordwest Fourths on 20 for 5. However, Colin Slater, with a superb innings of 92 not out, backed up by Nicky Dewstowe, with 21, enabled Haverfordwest Fourths to recover to reach 163 all out. Grant Hardy took 6 for 21 for Saundersfoot Seconds, who held out for a draw on a total of 96 for 5. Paul Morris, who shared a student flat with Warwickshire and England test cricketer Nick Knight, showed that he had picked up some tips from his old friend in reaching 28 not out, supported by Joe Duffy with 23 and Chris Hawkes with 18. Colin Slater was the pick of the Haverfordwest bowlers with a return of 2 for 6. Llangwm Thirds were bowled out for 131 at home to Narberth Thirds. Billy Brant scored 46 for the Llangwm team and the next highest scorer was 'Mr Extras' with a total of 25, with Martin Inward playing a cameo innings of 17. Off spinners Neil Rositer and Hugh Simpkins took 4 for 11 and 3 for 29, respectively. The visitors won by three wickets, with all of the plaudits going to Ceri Davies for his swashbuckling innings of 74 not out. He hit seven 4s and four 6s as the ball flew to all parts of the ground, supported by Richard Bevan with 17. Martin Inward showed the depth of his experience over the years by taking 5 for 22 in 12 accurate overs. Pembroke Dock Seconds were without a fixture on Monday.
