Division One
When Haverfordwest were 92 for seven after 29 overs at Narberth it looked as if Narberth might have caused the upset of the day. It was not to be however as the visitors showed their all round strength in the shape of spin bowler Nick Dyer and wicket keeper Huw Scriven. The pair took the total to 129 before Scriven was bowled over by Ollie Cook but Dyer went on to score 32 not out and for good measure hit two sixes from the last over bowled by Ian Hughes to take the visitors to a total of 144 for eight. Ceri Jones and Ben Hughes had done the early damage for Narberth although opening batsman Danny Potter had offered resistance with 30 and Vice Captain Karl Rhead with 21. However the visitors were in real difficulty until Dyer and Scriven came to the rescue with Scriven scoring 25 of the 37 runs added for the eighth wicket. Narberth had done extremely well to contain the strong Haverfordwest batting line-up but conceded 45 runs in the last five overs as Nick Dyer and Scriven took the game away. Cook finished with three for 29 from his ten overs whilst Jones and Hughes both made the batsmen concentrate as Ben Hughes took two for 28 and Jones two for 29 in their respective 12 over spells. Narberth's skipper Marc Hughes played a captain's innings and at 69 for three Narberth were sitting comfortably. However Hughes was caught by Huw Scriven off the bowling of Stephen Phillips for 55, a breezy innings from 65 balls which included three sixes and five fours. Remarkably no other batsmen reached double figures and Narberth were dismissed for 101. Paceman Simon Williams made the first breakthrough by having Thomas Richards caught by Danny Potter with the total on 20 and after the departure of Hughes on 69 wickets fell at regular intervals. Nick Dyer added four for 20 in nine overs to his contribution with the bat and Simon Williams finished with four for 43. Narberth had done extremely well to contain the strong Haverfordwest batting line-up but conceded 45 runs in the last five overs as Nick Dyer and Scriven took the game away. Cresselly are still snapping at the heels of the Division One leaders Haverfordwest and had a big win at home to Neyland by a margin of 158 runs. Cresselly reached a total of 248 for seven with six batsmen reaching more than 20 but all being dismissed for under 50! Middle order batsmen Phil Williams led the way with 42 supported by Julian Arthur with 38 including six fours and Ryan Lewis who hit 33 from 14 deliveries including two sixes and four fours. Other useful contributions came from Simon Cole with a stylish 28, Adam Chandler with 27 and Andrew Harris with 24. Harris had helped Julian Arthur put on 75 for the first wicket before Harris was bowled by Neyland spinner Gary Lloyd who finished with three for 57 and Greg Miller took three for 74. Paul Murray and Greg Miller gave the visitors a reasonable start in an opening partnership of 39 which ended when Miller was trapped leg before wicket to Richard Harris for 22. At one stage Neyland were 81 for three but their innings fell away when Murray was dismissed for 27 and Phil Sutton for 11 as spinner Ryan Lewis had a match winning spell of six for 25 and all rounder Richard Harris ended with four for 25. The visitors collapsed and were all out for 90. Hook were bowled out for 92 at home to Carew who won by seven wickets to keep in touch with the Division One leaders. Mick Haltam had a defiant innings of 25 with both Keith James and Brennan Lay scoring 17. Five Carew bowlers took wickets with Simon Wood taking three for ten in eight overs and skipper Rob Scourfield three for 11 in just over five overs and all rounder Tim Hicks finished with two for 19. The total was insufficient to test the qualities of the Carew batsmen and left hander Brian Hall scored 35 not out including five fours and another left hander Robert Hicks 27 not out to take the visitors to victory in an unbroken fourth wicket partnership, after three wickets had fallen comparatively cheaply including Nick Scourfield for 19. Andrew Thomas had made the breakthrough and finished with two for 28. Pembroke have found life rather difficult back in Division One but managed to hold on for a draw away to St. Ishmaels chasing a total of 174 for five. Last pair Nigel Phillips and Anton John kept the Tish bowlers out for the last four overs of the match. Phillip Hay top scored for Pembroke with 36 supported by Dan Scourfield with 22 after the leading batsmen Mathew Mitchell and Barry Evans were both dismissed for ten. Before tea Andrew Palmer with 49 and Phillip Cockburn with 32 added 84 for the second wicket before Palmer was bowled by Nigel Phillips for 49. All rounder Andrew Williams reached 25 not out and Andrew Pawlett 24. Spinner Nigel Phillips was the pick of the Pembroke bowlers and he commanded respect from all of the batsmen in his three for 16 spell. Whitland reached a total of 155 for eight at home to Lawrenny. Cardiff student Edward John, a product of the club's junior and youth section cemented the innings together with an excellent knock of 67 not out. The left hander added 65 in the fourth wicket partnership with Mark Lee who contributed 23. For Lawrenny Simon Cole took three for 34, skipper Steve Lewis three for 36 and opening bowler Robert Williams was a little unlucky not to take more than two for 12 in his ten overs. Lawrenny were never able to keep up with the required run rate and in the end settled for a draw on a total of 122 for eight. Andrew Cole senior scored 31 with four fours and one six supported by all rounder Simon Cole with 23. Hugh Griffiths with 16 not out and Chris Buckle batted out the last five overs in an undefeated ninth wicket partnership. Whitland skipper Paul Webb has an impressive spell of four for 22 and young opening bowler Owen Edwards finished with three for 40.
Division Two
Saundersfoot and Lamphey were both relegated from Division One last season and both teams produced some excellent cricket before Lamphey won by five wickets to a reply to a Saundersfoot total of 166 for nine. Saundersfoot openers David Parcell and Steve Cole had a first wicket partnership of 50. It was broken when Cole was bowled by leg spinner Paul White for 25 having hit one six and four fours in his innings. Parcell went on to score 32 again with one six and four fours before he was also bowled by White, Paul Mansbridge chipped in with 22 and later young all rounder Simon Stanford scored 23. Spinner White finished with four for 30 and appears to be enjoying the chance of a regular opportunity to bowl in Division Two. In support, Haydn Cole took three for 34 and former wicket keeper Mark Yea two for 38. An opening partnership of 87 between skipper Robert Matthias and Vice Captain Hywel Gibbs laid the platform for the Lamphey win. Gibbs scored 53 from 57 deliveries including one six and six fours before being trapped with his pads in front by Saundersfoot skipper Chris Parker and Matthias produced a solid innings of 54 from 93 deliveries before being stumped by Ian Poole off the bowling of Chris Parker. After Mark Yea became another Parker victim for 14, when he was caught by Simon Stanford, Nick Shelmerdine with 20 not out assisted by Grant Cole took the visitors to a winning total of 169 for five. Anthony Canton ripped through the Carew batting line-up and took the first six wickets to fall to finish with six for 13 from 12 tight overs. At one stage Carew Seconds were 46 for eight but lower order batsman Nick Cope scored 15 to give the Carew total a degree of respectability at 72. Richard McKay finished with two for five. In other Division Two matches Haverfordwest finished with 106 for five in reply to a Burton total of 188 for seven. Newly promoted Herbrandston had an exciting two wickets win at home to Llangwm who were bowled out for 79 and lowly Johnston were dismissed for 95 at home to Llanharan after the visitors had reached 168 all out.
Division Three
Whitland Seconds won by 91 runs away to Burton Seconds and have moved into third place in Division Three. Pearce scored 53 including nine fours and Thomas 42 and other useful contributions came from Simon Davies with 16 and James Davies with 16 not out. For the Burton team John Scale, Joe Dickson and Dean Hayes each collected two wickets. Narberth Seconds were dismissed for 83 away to Fishguard. Chris Richards did his best to hold everything together in his innings of 15. For the Fishguard team Ben Watson took four for 23 and Nigel Morgan three for five. Opener David Haynes with 42 not out steered Fishguard to a five wickets win and evergreen spinner Nick Evans took two for 19 for Narberth. The middle order batsmen contributed strongly as Jeremy Smith scored 22, Phil Lawrence 37, Keith May 28 not out and Mark Meyrick 19 to provide the bulk of runs. Jonathan Williams bowling spin took thee for 13 and Richard Allen bowled well with two for 19 off 12 overs. As might be expected the Kilgetty recovery was led by skipper Graham Jenkins with 85 not out from just 64 deliveries including ten fours. He had invaluable support from Richard Prout, the Kilgetty opening bowler with 28 not out. Prout injured his foot whilst bowling and batted with a runner and his innings included one six and two fours as he added 85 for the fifth wicket with Jenkins. Earlier Josh Bevan helped Jenkins add 41 for the fourth wicket and then stayed in to act as a runner for Prout who hit the winning six off the bowling of County Club Assistant Secretary John Harries.
