Division One

Lawrenny took a step closer to Division One survival in defeating the visitors from Neyland by 70 runs. A fourth wicket partnership of 121 between Simon Cole and Ian Jenkins was instrumental in Lawrenny reaching a total of 206 for 6. Cole finished with 78, Jenkins with 36, Steve Lewis had a breezy innings of 31 and the other batsmen in double figures were Christian Phillips with 12 not out and James Buckle with 10 not out. For the visitors, Jay Dunsford 2 for 24 and Greg Miller 2 for 35. Neyland suffered a setback when Greg Miller was bowled by Robert Williams from the first ball of the innings. However, a second wicket partnership of 74 between John Jones and skipper Andrew Miller appeared to be taking the visitors at least the safety of a draw. Jones had scored 41, including five 4s, when he gave a return catch to Ian Jenkins and Miller was caught by Steven Lewis off the bowling of Jenkins for 38. With the break-up of the partnership, wickets tumbled despite the efforts of Gary Lloyd with an undefeated 18 not out. Ian Jenkins took 4 for 29 in 12 overs and Steve Lewis 3 for 25 and Neyland were bowled out for 136 when Ian Charles was caught by 'keeper Christian Phillips off the bowling of James Buckle without scoring. Carew remain in second place in the table after being unable to dislodge the lower order Whitland batsmen. Carew had recovered from 63 for 5 to reach a 154 for 6, courtesy of a sixth wicket partnership of 72 between Steve Cole, who scored 35, and Aled Davies with 46 not out. Earlier, Brian Hall had scored 19 and Simon Wood 16. A stinging caught and bowled wicket by Mark Lee dismissed Wood and Lee ended with figures of 3 for 23, with other wickets falling to Paul Webb, Owen Edwards and Jonathan Davies. Opener Dave Lee with 48 gave the visitors a solid start, as did Paul Davies before he was run out for 25. However, the middle order Whitland batsmen succumbed and it was left to Meyrick Rowlands, a former Carew player, to battle out for a draw, with important help from teenagers Jonathan Davies and Bobby Webb. Rowlands ended with a defiant 28 not out which included a six and two 4s. For Carew, Aled Davies, who has had a new lease of life this season, took 2 for 9 from six overs, spinner John Canton 2 for 27 and Simon Wood 2 for 30. Narberth almost pulled off a surprise win at Haverfordwest, but in the end settled for a draw at 204 for 8 in response to a Town total of 215 for 5. A second wicket partnership of 134 between opener David Davies and the powerful Phil Kirkby provided the platform for the Haverfordwest total. Davies was caught by Marc Hughes off the bowling of leg spinner Greg Morris for 46, which included six 4s, but Kirkby went on to score an excellent 83 before being bowled by Ian Hughes. Kirkby faced 91 deliveries and hit a six and 13 fours. Karl Rhead scored 46 not out from 37 deliveries and was helped by Andrew Phillips who had scored 13 to give the innings a late boost. Narberth skipper Ian Hughes finished with figures of 2 for 50. Although opener Thomas Richards was an early casualty, the Narberth early order prospered. Marc Hughes scored 72, including 11 fours, before being stumped by Huw Scriven off the bowling of Stephen Phillips and Paul Phillips exuded class in his innings of 89, including a six and 10 fours, which ended when he was bowled by paceman Simon Williams for 89. In the frantic search for runs, wickets tumbled and the visitors fell from 187 for 2 to lose six wickets in adding just 17 runs before the innings closed. Simon Williams got amongst the lower order to finish with 3 for 60, Stephen Phillips took 2 for 27 and other wickets fell to Clive Tucker and Adrian Griffiths. Cresselly were involved in a high scoring draw at Burton after totaling 262 for 4. Simon Cole and skipper Lyn Richards had a big partnership of 156 for the second wicket. Lyn Richards was dismissed after scoring 66, including 11 fours, but the cultured Cole went on to score 138, including five 6s and 15 fours, before being caught on the boundary by Oliver Sheldrake off the bowling of John Griffiths. Damian Arthur with 17, Adam Chandler with 14 not out and Julian Arthur with 13 had supporting roles. Kevin Roberts, Jonathan Venables and John Griffiths each picked up a wicket for Burton, who were held to 210 for 9 in reply. Oliver Sheldrake had a dashing innings of 79, which included three 6s and 11 fours, before being trapped in front off the bowling of spinner Simon Cole. All-rounder Simon Jones and Jonathan Venables both scored 24 and Richard Scriven had a hard-hitting knock of 23. Simon Cole, who many observers think is under bowled at Cresselly, ended with figures of 5 for 42 and Lyn Richards took 2 for 48. Lowly Lamphey were bowled out for 76 at home to St. Ishmaels. Robert Matthias, in his first Division One game of the season, offered the greatest resistance in his innings of 22, which ended when he was bowled by spinner Steven Williams. The only other batsmen in double figures were Ian Kerrison with 14 and opener Alan Lewis with 10. Steve Williams ended with figures of 4 for 27, his spin twin Daniel Flynn took 3 for 16 and Andrew Williams 2 for 5. Tish had a comfortable 10 wickets win upon reaching 79 without loss. Jonathan Pawlett scored 36 not out with two 6s and four 4s and skipper Peter Bradshaw was 35 not out.

Division Two

Second placed Pembroke have opened up a gap on the chasing pack with an exciting three wickets win away to Llanrhian. Andrew Jenkins scored 42, Luke Jones 30, Andrew Lees 20 and Tim Sterling 16 not out in the Llanrhian total of 194 for 8. For Pembroke, Anton John took 3 for 33 and Nigel Phillips 2 for 42. Skipper Mathew Mitchell led by example with a cracking innings of 80 before being bowled by Gareth Davies. In an aggressive innings, he scored a six and 12 fours and received support from Mark Fraser, who scored 29, in a second wicket partnership of 73. Kevin Jenkins chipped in with 25 and Dan Scourfield with 14 and Pembroke reached 195 for 7 to win by three wickets with three overs remaining. Ben Jones took 3 for 16 and Gareth Davies 2 for 48. Saundersfoot scored 222 for 9 at home to Fishguard, but still lost by eight wickets as the visitors reached 223 for 2. Barry Phillips and Mike Franklin had an opening partnership of 57, which ended when Franklin was dismissed for 25. However, Barry Phillips looked in fine form in his innings of 80, which included 10 fours and a six, and the momentum was maintained and indeed increased with some spectacular batting by Mike Williams. In just 50 balls, Williams scored 78, an innings which included six 6s and seven 4s, and he played some superb straight drives. Ian Poole had a cameo innings of 14. Paul De Groot took 4 for 42 for the visitors who won with nine overs to spare. Openers Adam Raymond and Jonathan Twigg dominated the Fishguard innings in their opening partnership of 189. Raymond was in full flow and reached a century when the total was on 136. He scored 140 with two 6s and 22 fours after Twigg was dismissed for 57. Kevin Sykes and Barry Phillips were the Saundersfoot wicket-takers. Carew Seconds now occupy the bottom place in Division Two following their 10 wickets defeat away to Johnston. The visitors were bowled out for 81 as Chris Fitzpatrick took 4 for 28 and Gary James 3 for 16. Carew opener Ceri Davies scored 27, Ross Helmich 16 and Adam Hughes 14. Johnston won by 10 wickets on reaching 85 without loss after 17 overs. John Summons was 38 not out with seven 4s and Chris Fitzpatrick 37 not out with five 4s. In other Division Two matches, Hook scored 246 for 6 at home to Haverfordwest Seconds, who held out for a draw on 223 for 8, and Llangwm had a five wickets win at home to Stackpole after dismissing the visitors for 123.

Division Three

Manorbier lost by five wickets to Llechryd after being bowled out for 112. Neil Powling top scored with 28, supported by Mark Meyrick with 26 not out. Ray Hasler took 4 for 24 for Llechryd and there were two wickets each for Kevin Evans and skipper Steve Curran. Hasler had a good all-round match and scored an undefeated 44, including seven 4s and two 6s, in the Llechryd total of 115 for 5. Steve Curran played a supporting role until he was caught off a top edge at first slip by Keith May off the bowling of Neil Powling for 39 and Steve Smith scored 14. Jeremy Smith took 3 for 33 for Manorbier. Pembroke Dock dismissed the visitors Lamphey Seconds for 98, with John Davies taking 3 for 9 and Neil Hallett 2 for 17. Haydn Cole had a typically aggressive innings of 35, which included a six and six 4s, supported by Gareth Scourfield with 16 and Jonathan Mathias with 12. The Dock lost six wickets in reaching a winning total of 99 and were indebted to Nick Daley, who scored 43, for holding the innings together. John Davies was the other batman in double figures with 16, 11-year-old James Skeels took 2 for 6 for the visitors. Narberth Seconds won by eight wickets at home to Camrose and Spittal, who recovered from 69 for 8 to reach 111 before being bowled out. Skipper Rod Mason scored 22, Martin Williams 19 and David Osborne 14 not out. Off-spinner Dan Hughes took 5 for 26, opening bowler Richard Prout took 3 for 39 and Richard Howell accounted for the tail with 2 for 3. An excellent second wicket partnership of 101 between Joe Allen and Andrew Williams guided Narberth Seconds to an eight wickets win upon reaching 115 for 2. Allen scored 59 with six 4s and Williams also found the boundary six times in his undefeated innings of 30. Hundleton lost by 45 runs at home to Division three leaders Herbrandston, who scored 158 before being dismissed. Gary Davies scored 44 and was supported by Alan McLlelland with 30 and Paul John with 33. Richard Allen took 3 for 22 and there were two wickets each for Nigel Arthur and Riaan Strydom.

Division Four

Division Four leaders Whitland Seconds built up a huge total of 243 for 5 at home to Llangwm Seconds who lost by 156 runs after being dismissed for 87. The Whitland batsmen were in consistent form. Teenager Jonathan Thomas scored 63 with eight 4s and the experienced Peter Wright 45 with seven 4s, Simon Davies scored 44 not out, Kevin Pearce 38 and Darren Rees 30. Mathew Hughes took 2 for 41 for the visitors, who found Whitland skipper Stuart Harries difficult to handle as Harries took 7 for 25 in just six overs. On two occasions he took three wickets in one over and was supported by Sion Lynch who took 2 for 13. James Lewis with 29 was the only Llangwm batsman in double figures and there were 12 extras. An exciting game at Cresselly ended in a draw with Cresselly Seconds on 180 for 7 chasing a Pembroke Seconds total of 189 for 6. Opening batsman Huw Davies top scored for the visitors with nine 4s before being bowled by Cresselly Seconds skipper Richard Arthur. Teenager Rob Weston backed up with 41, as did Lee Jenkins with 24 and skipper Simon Smith- Wrench with 20. For the Cresselly team, there were two wickets each for Richard Arthur, Neil Gregory and Sion Jenkins. Cresselly Seconds were given a good start by openers Rhydian Rees with 42 and Steve Davies with 46. Each batsman found the boundary five times and the main support came from Hugh Griffiths with 27. Davies and Griffiths were both bowled by Gwyn Griffiths, who finished with 6 for 50 for the visitors, and John Harries picked up the other wicket to fall. Carew Thirds held on for a draw after scoring 120 for 7 in reply to a Crymych total of 192 for 8. Seventeen-year-old Nitai Durey scored 73 for the visitors, supported by Eurig Lewis with 36, David Deardon with 16 and Rhydian Wyn, who also scored 16. David Sefton took 2 for 33 and there were also two wickets each for Seb Palin and Ceri Brace. David Rees scored 22 when Carew replied, opener Gethan Evans 21 and Russell Knox 17. Middle order batsman Seb Palin was 21 not out at the end. David Deardon took 3 for 23 for Crymych and Eurig Lewis 2 for 36. The batsmen held the upper hand at Kilgetty where Kilgetty were home to Lawrenny Seconds. A first wicket partnership of 73 between Mike Johns and Craig Hurst took the Kilgetty total to 176 for 8. Graham Jenkins continued the good work with 64 from 80 deliveries. Mike Johns had been bowled by John Fuller for 25 and Hurst fell to a brilliant catch by veteran wicket- keeper David Jones off the bowling of Owen Williams for 39. Jones was also on form with the bat and scored 40 before he was caught by Craig Hurst off the bowling of Anthony Bevan and Chris Williams scored 56 with 10 fours. Opener John Fuller chipped in with 21 and Johnnie Morris was 16 not out. The visitors appeared to be heading for a win, but the Kilgetty bowlers applied the brakes and the Lawrenny innings closed on 162 for 4. Duane Reynolds took 3 for 47 and Anthony Bevan was unlucky not to pick up more than one wicket for Kilgetty.

Division Five

St. Florence made the long journey to Llanrhian and were restricted to 127 for 8. Opening batsman Peter Hall hit five 4s and two 6s in his innings of 42. The only other batsmen in double figures were Peter Rice and Richard Jones, who both scored 16. Chris Morgan took 3 for 25, Dave Moore 3 for 30 and Gavin Robb 2 for 30 for Llanrhian Seconds, who won by four wickets upon reaching a total of 128 for 6. Peter Sterling scored 29, Tim Lowndes 28, James Morris 28 and Chris Morgan 15. Ben McDonnell took 4 for 26 for the visitors, supported by Richard Jones with 2 for 45. Saundersfoot Seconds had to forfeit their away match to St. Ishmaels Seconds as they had two many players unavailable. Burton Thirds scored 226 all out at home to Whitland Thirds. Daniel Wilkes led the scoring with 56, Adam Davies provided solid support with 44 and teenager James Cromwell scored 20. Alan Proctor took 4 for 41 for the visitors, Carl Smith 3 for 67 and John Davies 2 for 60. Whitland skipper Gwyn Phillips did his best to hold the innings together with a fine knock of 67, including 10 fours, but apart from Paul Kirk with 20 and Proctor with 17, the remaining batsmen succumbed to the Burton bowling. Whitland Thirds were bowled out for 152, as William Bowen took 3 for 15, Joe Dickson 2 for 33 and Morgan Scale 2 for 13.

Division Six

Narberth Thirds declared upon reaching 219 for 4 at home to Llangwm Thirds and won by 176 runs after dismissing the visitors for 43 with no batsman scoring double figures. In the Narberth innings, Neil Rossiter scored 83 with 11 fours, Asher Stanford 50 and opener Clive Jones 45, with Huw Simpkins scoring 13 not out. When the visitors batted, Richard Evans took 4 for 11, John Owen 3 for 6 and Sam McNaughton 3 for 12. Kilgetty Seconds were bowled out for 114 in their away match against Haverfordwest Fourths. Jake Marsh scored 29 of the runs, Grant James supported with 16, Richard Gwyther scored 15 and Duane Rossiter 14. Ross Dewstowe took 4 for 31 for the Haverfordwest team, supported by Colin Slater with three for 15. Haverfordwest Fourths won by three wickets with a total of 117 for 7. Ross Dewstowe and Colin Slater followed up their bowling performances by scoring 39 and 23, respectively, as Jack Bevan took 3 for 20 and Richard Gwyther 2 for 37 for the visitors. Pembroke Seconds won by 20 runs away to Crymych Seconds, despite being bowled out for 113. James Olyott scored 31 not out, John Lewis 27 and Luke Murray 16. For the visitors, Euros Jones took 4 for 15 and David Sayer 2 for 30. Excellent bowling by James White, who took 5 for 24, and Phillip Scott, who took 3 for 6, set up the win for the Dock, despite the efforts of Crymych opener Gwyndaf Rees, who scored 17 not out. The other batsmen in double figures were Fraser Dandy with 21, while Dyfed Sion and Martin Davies both scored 13.
