Division One

Haverfordwest had the upper hand in the Division One match of the day at Carew after building up a total of 188 for 8. The innings was dominated by Phil Kirkby with a full range of shots all around the wicket. The left- hander had scored 94, including three 6s and 11 fours, when he was caught out in the deep by Brian Hall off the bowling of Tim Hicks. Opener Danny Potter scored 42 and lower order batsman Huw Scriven 12. Simon Wood took 5 for 37 and Tim Hicks 2 for 46. Last season, Nick Scourfield and Ian Sefton scored over 1,000 runs between them for Carew. Scourfield is out for the season with a broken leg following a football injury and Sefton will be out for five weeks after breaking his arm in the match against Lawrenny recently. In their absence, the batting does not always fire on all cylinders. Despite a fighting innings of 40 by skipper Robert Scourfield, Carew were always up against it with the all round strength of the Town attack, but former captain Darren Thomas gave his team a draw with a splendid rearguard innings of 33 not out. For the visitors, Stephen Phillips took 3 for 25 and Simon Williams 2 for 27. Lamphey created the surprise result of the day after defeating the visitors Lawrenny by 20 runs. A rather makeshift looking Lamphey team accumulated 137 before being bowled out and experienced opening batsman Alan Lewis batted throughout the innings for 52 not out from 103 deliveries. He had some help from Nick Johnson with 24 and Ahter Ali with 19, while Rizwan Hassan and Hywel Gibbs were the only other batsmen in double figures. Swing bowler William Morris inflicted most of the damage with an excellent return of 5 for 39 supported by Robert Williams with 3 for 41. Lawrenny were sitting pretty at 83 for 1, but when Simon Cole was bowled by spinner Will Silcox for 46 and shortly afterwards Ian Jenkins was run out for 13, it triggered a Lawrenny collapse. Simon Cole had looked in no trouble in stroking the ball around and hit seven 4s during his innings, but Silcox is capable of producing the occasional gem and when he bowled Cole a steady procession of batsmen followed to and from the crease. Spinner Rizwan Hassan had a match winning spell of 5 for 10, beating the Lawrenny batsmen through the air and at the other end left-arm spinner Andrew Skeels picked up 2 for 11 as Lawrenny were bowled out for 117. Earlier, opener Adrian Harries had a solid innings of 28. St. Ishmaels had a seven wickets win at home to Burton who were bowled out for 123. Glyn Griffiths top scored with 38, backed up by Steven Williams with 35, Daniel Howells with 15 not out and Jonathan Pawlett with 13. John Venables, John Griffiths and John Scale picked up a wicket each for the visitors. Second placed Neyland bowled out the home team Narberth for 132 following a good all round team effort. Spinner Phil Davies continued his good form to take 4 for 27, with other wickets falling to John Jones, Ian Charles, Gary Lloyd and Greg Miller. Lower order batsman Ceri Jones had an aggressive innings of 33 from 28 deliveries and the other contributors to the Narberth total were Wayne Howells with a steadfast innings of 25, opener Thomas Richards with 21 and Paul Phillips with 15. Skipper Andrew Miller steered the visitors to a six wickets win with his innings of 49, including 10 fours, before being trapped in front by Will Davidson. John Jones scored 39 before being stumped by Rob Simons off Greg Miller and Paul Murray was 29 not out at a run a ball. Ian Hughes, Greg Morris, Will Davidson and Ceri Jones were the wicket-takers for Narberth. Cresselly spinner Ryan Lewis took 5 for 37 as the visitors Whitland were dismissed for 138. He had support from Richard Harris and Mathew Lewis, who both picked up two wickets. Whitland's skipper Paul Webb offered most of the resistance with his innings of 53, which included six 4s, before giving a return catch to Mathew Lewis. Mark Lee scored 27 and Colin John 18, including two big 6s. Cresselly cruised to a winning total of 142 for 4. Adam Chandler in his first game of the season had a class innings of 38 with a six and five 4s, while Simon Cole and Julian Arthur also found the boundary five times in their respective knocks of 34 and 28.
