Councillors in Tenby have been told by Pembrokeshire County Council that ‘traffic calming measures’ won’t be considered for one of the town’s estates.

Requests have been made several times this year by members of Tenby Town Council to the local authority to consider putting traffic calming measures in place along with a 5 mph limit sign at The Glebe.

Speaking at this month’s meeting of Tenby Town Council, the clerk read out a reply from PCC’s head of infrastructure Darren Thomas, which stated that in line with PCC policy, traffic calming measures had to be prioritised based on proven high speeds and poor accident records.

Mr Thomas also explained that staff were currently at capacity planning the introduction of the Welsh Government’s new 20 mph speed limits for September next year.

Cllr Sue Lane said that 20 mph zones were ‘all well and good’ but speed limits already in place outside schools were not being enforced, so she failed to see the logic as how the Welsh Government could bring in more?

She proposed writing back to PCC noting the town council’s ‘disappointment’ as it seemed to her that they were waiting for an accident to happen before something is done. “Prevention is surely better than remedy after event,” she added.
