Pembrokeshire County Council has declared war on weeds.

It is the first local authority in the UK to directly employ an environmentally friendly method of using heat to kill weeds.

The council has already taken delivery of the Waipuna weed control machine which will shortly become a familiar sight on the county's streets while the system is trialled to test its effectiveness.

The system, which can also be used to combat discarded chewing gum and graffiti, does not use pesticides and is safe and easy to use.

Heat is applied to weeds using biogradeable organic hot foam from a specially developed and patented machine. The foam is heated to over 90 degrees Celsius, applied to the weeds, sealing in the heat, and then dissipating harmlessly after a few minutes.

Said county council cabinet member for transport and the environment, Clr. Brian Hall: "The difference between the Waipuna system and conventional weed control methods is that Waipuna does not create harmful, toxic chemical or pesticide residues. It is kind to the environment.

"It is also very accurate in dealing with a variety of weeds and if used in parks and play areas, children can be back playing within a few minutes."

Over the next few weeks the Waipuna will be in action in Brunel Quay, Neyland, before moving to Pembroke Dock.
