Local councillors are calling on younger members of the community to fill the void of a town crier for Tenby.
The town’s Mayor, Clr. Laurence Blackhall, recently said that it would be lovely to have a new town crier after the most recent person to fill the position resigned.
Clr. Blackhall said that, although it would certainly be a challenge to fulfil the position as well as the late John Thomas did, who served as town crier for more than 30 years, he hoped it wouldn’t put people off coming forward.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, the town clerk, Andrew Davies, said that they did receive interest from someone for the position, but that they had withdrawn their CV at the last minute, so they would re-advertise the role in the new year.
In the meantime, Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, said that it would be worth holding a competition for a ‘junior’ town crier for the role.
“We had a very good one a few years ago, so it wouldn’t hurt to have a junior crier whilst we’re still looking for a full-time senior one,” she suggested, asking for the item to be kept on the agenda.
