Local councillors have agreed to support a proposal to introduce a 20 mph speed limit to the centre of Tenby and its outskirts.
At Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, correspondence from Tenby Civic Society trustee Neil Westerman was discussed by councillors, who stated that at the last committee meeting of the Society - the idea of introducing a 20 mph zone covering the whole of Tenby was proposed.
“Being situated on a peninsula, Tenby is ideally suited for introducing such a zone,” explained Mr. Westerman.
“Currently, a 20 mph speed limit exists on a section of Greenhill Road and St. John’s Hill. These could form the boundaries for a 20 mph zone together with a point on the Norton (at Gas Lane junction) and Lower Park Road (the railway bridge) thus covering all of the central area of Tenby.
“As well as road safety measures it is important to highlight the contribution that 20 mph zones can have in encouraging more physical activity, such as walking and cycling by contributing towards a safer environment.
The money spent on traffic calming measures (speed humps, road narrowing, planting, chicanes) could also greatly improve the character of Tenby and the quality of life for residents and visitors,” he added.
Responding to the proposals, Clr. Mike Evans said it was something that the town council had touted previously for the town centre.
“We’ve discussed this before, but the main problem with any speed limit introduction is enforcement,” he told his colleagues.
“We as a council fought hard for the introduction of 20 mph limits outside the school. You often see vehicles speeding down the centre of the town, so I would support any speed limit introduced in Tudor Square.”
Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown also agreed with the suggestion. “I agree with the areas that the Civic Society have proposed. You often still here cars zooming down Park Road at 3 am in the morning,” she said.
Councillors agreed unanimously to support the proposal to introduce a 20 mph zone to cover most of Tenby.
