A Saundersfoot councillor has moved to seek safety measures are in place so that the village’s children can access and exit the local play park safely.
“Over the last six months it’s been great to see all the young children and families using the village play park. However, I have also witnessed numerous cars driving in on a frequent basis to use the sports facilities or to just park on the sports field,” said county councillor for the South Ward Cllr Chris Williams.
“With this in mind I applied to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority for a grant for additional barriers to go parallel with access onto the sports field.
“This will mean that as children leave the park there will be an additional 30 metre barrier to protect them.
“As I’ve also seen children running straight out without looking, the barrier will prevent this and ensure that this will be a safe environment.
“I’ve also asked if the Community Council can take back the curbs opposite and at both ends to make it easier for car access and insert 5mph floor signs as well as speed bumps.
“The sports field is a great boost to the village economy during the summer months and some days there are over 400 cars parked there. This helps with the ongoing problem of parking in the village but also means that 800 cars pass the park.
“We all have to work together to ensure safety is top of the agenda. The grant was successful and has been awarded by Visit Wales and is on the agenda at the Community Council at their March meeting for all local councillors to debate.
“I’m hoping for a vast improvement on safety measures by all parties so that everyone can enjoy the facilities, whether you’re parking or playing,” continued Cllr Williams, adding that recently two projects were submitted to the Enhancing Pembrokeshire schemefor speed awareness variable speed signs and a new roof for the changing rooms at the Sports Field.
“I’ve been made aware both bids have been successful and, hopefully, will be ratified by PCC’s cabinet. This is excellent news and both will have an impact in their community in different ways,” he added.
