A local county councillor has submitted a Notice of Motion to Pembrokeshire County Council in relation to tackling the B4318 flooding hotspot at Gumfreston which constantly affects a route in and out of Tenby.
County councillor for the wards of St Florence and Gumfreston, Cllr Rhys Jordan has put forward that his request be processed in accordance with the Council’s usual procedure for Notices of Motion and included for consideration at the next Full Council meeting.
Cllr Jordan stated: “Council notes the longstanding and recurring flooding of the B4318 at Gumfreston and the significant disruption this causes to residents, businesses and the wider Tenby area.
“Council also notes the Senedd petition calling for a long-term flood mitigation solution, which attracted approximately 3,500 signatures, and the subsequent confirmation from Welsh Government that Natural Resources Wales (NRW) would undertake further feasibility and options work during 2026.
“Council recognises that Pembrokeshire County Council has an important role, alongside NRW and Welsh Government, in helping to progress a sustainable long-term solution.
“Council further notes that when the B4318 is closed, Devonshire Drive and the surrounding local road network are relied upon as an alternative route, placing additional pressure on this infrastructure.”
Cllr Jordan’s Notice of Motion therefore resolves to request that Cabinet:
- Considers how Pembrokeshire County Council can work with NRW and Welsh Government to progress a long-term solution to flooding at Gumfreston following completion of the current feasibility work;
- Considers what improvements can be made to Devonshire Drive and the associated diversion route to improve its resilience and suitability when the B4318 is closed; and
- Provides an update through the appropriate democratic process within three months of this motion being referred to Cabinet, setting out progress on both the long-term Gumfreston solution and consideration of interim improvements to Devonshire Drive.
