Calls for Pembrokeshire County Council to switch- on to a new lighting scheme for a lane in Tenby have been made this week.

Concerned about the lack of lighting at Wallsfield Lane, Clr. Michael Williams believes that this is the appropriate time to address the problem, prior to the setting of the next financial year's estimates.

Said Clr. Williams in a letter to the local authority: "Over the last 20 years, the character of this lane has completely changed. From having no residential dwellings, it now has 16, together with two businesses and the main access to a junior school. As well as these users, there are a number of lock- up garages accessed from the lane and it is an extensively used thoroughfare between St. Johns Hill and Greenhill Road.

"It should be noted that many of the residents are elderly, and find leaving or entering their properties very daunting after dark. Considerable use is made of the school during winter evenings, and again parents find using this lane uncomfortable.

"It is incongruous to say the least, that in the 21st century a well-used urban area such as this has no public lighting, and I would request that the appropriate sum is allocated in estimates for 2008/ 09.

"I fully understand that the council has a very tight settlement this year, but the needs of these residents deserves prioritising."

When contacted by the Observer, Pembrokeshire County Council said they would consider the request by Clr. Williams for street lighting at Wallsfield Lane, together with any other similar requests received by the authority.

Said the spokeswoman: "Any new street lighting scheme is subject to the necessary funds being made available in next year's budget, which has not yet been finalised."
