Pembrokeshire County Council has issued a warning to householders about bogus telephone calls during which financial details are requested. The council recently responded to a telephone enquiry from a concerned local resident who was suspicious when she received an early evening telephone call allegedly from the authority's 'council tax section'. The householder was informed that she was entitled to a council tax rebate which would be transferred to her bank account if she could provide personal account details. "The customer quite correctly refused and contacted the authority the following morning for advice," said council spokesman Len Mullins. "We were able to confirm to her that indeed the call was bogus. Although it is not uncommon for staff to contact customers for information in the evening, we would not request these financial details over the telephone. "Our advice to householders who receive similar suspicious calls is that they should be cautious and request the name of the caller and their direct telephone number. They can then return the call the following morning if they believe it was not genuine."
