Residents parking schemes in Tenby may in future be supported by the town council as long as they do not compromise safety of pedestrians and other road users and would maintain access at all times for the emergency services.

The decision taken this week marks a policy change by the council, who had previously resolved to not support any such schemes in the town.

Speaking on Tuesday night, Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas revealed that the Walled Town Residents Association had asked Pembrokeshire County Council to consider residents parking schemes within the walled town.

However, she noted that the town council - who opposed the schemes now operating in Harding Street and Trafalgar Road - had a policy against any further schemes in the town and wondered if members could reconsider.

Clr. Mickey Folland admitted that residents parking schemes were "a sticky problem," but pointed out that they were generally generated by residents themselves.

"Pembrokeshire County Council find that they are a generally successful undertaking and personally I would support such a scheme if there is no conflict with road safety issues," he said.

"Any scheme has to ensure safety for emergency services, pedestrians and other road users. If any of these are compromised by a residents parking scheme, then I would not support it."

Clr. Trevor Hallett felt such schemes were "only giving people the right to park outside their houses if there were spaces."

"My view is that the fairest solution would be parking meters," he continued. "That would give everyone the same chance of getting one of the limited number of spaces."

Clr. Folland pointed out that people who entered into residents parking schemes entered into the agreement knowing that they were not guaranteed a parking space.

He also felt that such schemes were a more aesthetic way of providing car parking, rather that "filling an historic town like Tenby with parking meters."

"We are trying to establish if we are in favour of these schemes and if we followed the lines I hold as my personal view, then we would be using the same reasoning as the county council," he added.

The Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, agreed that residents parking schemes appeared to work in areas of the town where they were already established and felt that, with the provisions outlined by Clr. Folland, they could be supported.
