Mayor of Pembroke, Clr. Mrs. Rose Blackburn, has given a vote of thanks to people who make an outstanding contribution to the community, yet do not expect to receive praise or recognition. Three individuals and four voluntary organisations received award certificates from the Mayor at the town council's annual awards ceremony held in the Tudor Room at Pembroke Town Hall. Clr. Blackburn said: "This ceremony gives the town and its residents the chance to say a big thank you for the contribution these dedicated and generous people have made to their community over many years." Certificates of Commendation went to: Mrs. Vera John, central organiser for South Pembrokeshire Red Cross. Mr. Graham Sheppard, who organises various events, including village fetes, horticultural shows, whist drives, coffee mornings, senior citizens lunches and other social events within the community. He has been a St. David's Church warden for many years and is a longstanding member of the Pembrokeshire Football Referees Society. Mr. Philip Rogers, who for over 50 years has been a loyal and dedicated bell ringer (tower captain) at St. Mary's Church, Pembroke. Pembroke and District Swimming Club; and WRVS Pembroke Meals on Wheels Team which delivers 30 meals a day, 150 hot meals every week of the year to older and vulnerable residents in their own homes. The members of the Pembroke team are all volunteers and have provided this service for many years. Meanwhile, Awards of Merit have been presented to: Pembroke and Pembroke Dock Lions Club, which since its formation in 1980 has raised well over £100,000 to support local, national and international charities and individuals. They also raise funds by selling a wide range of items at their charity shop in Pembroke. Pembroke and District Citizens Advice, which as well as its main office in Pembroke Dock, holds weekly sessions in Kilgetty, Neyland, Tenby and every Tuesday morning at Pembroke Town Hall. The bureau has a total of 30 staff, including 15 unpaid volunteers who last year gave advice to over 6,000 clients on issues such as debt, benefits, employment, consumer rights and housing.
