Local councillors have been left 'nun' too impressed by plans to hang a suggestive-looking wall sign on the front of a proposed new hotel in the town.

At Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, members raised no objections to plans submitted by a Mr. S. Roche for the change of use at St. Teresa's in St. Florence Parade to a hotel to be named 'The Convent' and comprising of 12 en- suite bedrooms, along with a bar and restaurant.

However, they were concerned about the proposed wall-mounted sign, which depicted an image of a nun which members felt was a little provocative for the former convent building.

"I just feel that the content of the sign is very inappropriate and in very poor taste," commented Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane.

Mayor of Tenby, Clr. John Griffiths, agreed with his colleague.

"I think the sign is a bit disrespectful to the nuns who used to run a convent there and also the fact that it's situated next to a church," he said, although Clr. Trevor Hallett tried to lighten the discussion by joking that he felt the matter was a "storm in a D-cup".

Councillors rejected the plans for the wall mounted sign, but welcomed the proposals to change the premises into a hotel.

"With so many hotels closing in the area, it's nice to see someone making an effort to actually open one," remarked Clr. Damien Brown.

The council's recommendations will be passed on to the Pembrokeshire National Park Authority.
