Kilgetty and Begelly Community Council are progressing with plans to purchase the land and buildings adjoining the village’s Community Centre.

Back over the summer, councillors for the ward announced the good news that the local Community Centre was to be saved - with an important milestone reached to secure its future.

Councillors had stated previously, that they were ‘wholeheartedly determined’ to retain the village’s Community Centre, in light of the fact that the land it sits on, had been put up for sale by the Co-op.

At the most recent meeting of the Community Council, members were asked to consider a ‘Business Case’ presented by the clerk, for purchase of the land off Carmarthen Road, which includes the car park, toilet block, and the Community Centre’s adjoining annexe buildings.

The proposal will see the Community Council apply for a loan to part fund the purchase, after an offer was accepted by the Co-op.

At the meeting, Cllr Brenda Jones proposed the 10-year option be implemented, with Cllr John Whitby seconding the proposal, and all councillors in agreement.

Cllr Peter Adams proposed the Business Case report be accepted and used to support the loan application. Cllr Beryl Quigley seconded the proposal with all councillors in agreement.

Councillors had previously highlighted the importance of the Community Centre, pointing towards the fact that it is used by over 300 people every week, whilst the car park and public toilets are also a valuable asset to local residents and many visitors.

Community Council chair Cllr Diane Lockley had stated: “This important milestone secures the future of the Centre for the benefit of everyone in our community.”

County Councillor for the ward, Cllr Alistair Cameron remarked: “This will come as an enormous relief to the many local residents who have been very worried about the possible loss of our community centre.”
