Councillors in Tenby have said that they 'like' the possibility of setting up a Facebook page for the town council.

Discussing a matter relating to the Poundland store opening at the former Royal Playhouse Cinema site in Tenby, the conversation turned to social media providing a forum for the council to garner views of local residents.

Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter told her colleagues at Tuesday night's meeting of the council that she was fed up with people writing letters to the media and laying the blame at the feet of the town council for such a development.

This led to town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies, mentioning that online threads on various Facebook pages had formed a lengthy discussion on such issues, and especially on the colour of the frontage of the former cinema building, changing from being painted yellow originally to now white.

"This seems like a good point of public engagement and shows that people are more ready to use social media to get their points across," said Mr. Davies.

"The town council have previously relied on members of the public writing to us or stopping councillors in the street. If we were to set up our own Facebook page it would be another avenue for us to put information out there and enhance our consultation with the public, where people could pass their comments onto us on various matters.

"It could also act as a point of information in making people aware of road closures and informing them about planning application consultations etc," he continued.

Clr. Mike Evans felt it was a good idea, if monitored correctly, and also suggested that the town council look into setting up a Twitter profile too.
