Members of Pembrokeshire County Council have rejected the Welsh Assembly's proposal to offer ageing councillors a 'golden handshake' to make way for younger members.

At a meeting of full council yesterday (Thursday), the scheme to offer those with over 16 years service £1,000 per year up to a total of £20,000 was turned down by 30 votes to nil.

Over 20 councillors who would be eligible for the 'handshake' did not take part in the discussion or vote on the matter.
