Cash strapped Pembrokeshire County Council could sign up to funding a local triathlon to the tune of £20k a year for the next three years.
Cabinet members will discuss a proposal to provide the money to Activity Wales for its Long Course Weekend (which is held in Tenby and the surroundng area) at its meeting on Monday, October 8.
The event is considered a ‘strong platform to promote Pembrokeshire on a national and international standing.’
Activity Wales has requested the financial support ‘in order to enable this event to grow sustainably.’
A yearly review is proposed, along with a more comprehensive three-year review at the end of the term.
Comments in a report to cabinet from the director of resources state: “Whilst the Council is experiencing significant financial challenges, all contributions must be considered for affordability and benefit to the County.
“The substantial financial contribution to the local economy by the Long Course Weekend clearly outweighs the £20k per annum contribution. There is currently only a £4k per annum budget for the Long Course Weekend so it will mean an increase in the budget.”
