Narberth councillors have offered no objections to a major planning development for the town, despite a strong letter of opposition.
Former Deputy Mayor, Clr. Malcolm Connah, welcomed what he described as a 'prestige' development at Higher Panteg, Station Approach, when the matter came before councillors at their meeting on Tuesday night.
The application, submitted by Mr. P. Griffiths, is for a proposed change of use of the existing residential home to an office, including new office/storage extension, and three houses with integral garages.
While considering the application, a letter was read from local resident, Mrs. Jan Kelly, who was 'up in arms' about the increase in traffic and noise the new development was likely to create.
Mrs. Kelly, who had also sent a copy of the letter to the county council, informed members that she and local residents were strongly opposed to the application and she was organising a petition against the development.
"I was the person who brought the rumours about a major housing development to this council and I myself brought to the council the plans by Dr. Roy Davies who was looking for a home for the local Health Group," explained Clr. Connah.
"Certainly, as a resident of Station Approach, I will not be signing the petition," he stated.
"It is a prestige development for Narberth," he opined.
"It may not bring jobs in the first instance, but in the future it certainly will.
"It is a major prestige development that will benefit Narberth greatly," he added.
Although, Clr. Connah supported the application, he expressed two concerns.
One that no further planning be allowed, and the other that consideration be given to improving the surface and entrance to Station Approach.
Clr. David Norcross also suggested that traffic calming measures, such as sleeping policemen, could be considered to reduce the speed of traffic.
After considering the plans, members agreed to offer no objection to the application, but asked for consideration to be given to prohibiting additional developments, improving the junction of Kiln Park Road and Station Approach and introducing traffic calming measures.
