Tenby Town Council have backed a bid by Tenby United Rugby Club for a public entertainment licence (PEL), allowing music and dancing until 1 am on Friday and Saturday nights.

The club relinquished its previous PEL when it changed to a pub licence in March and are making application to Pembrokeshire County Council's licensing sub-committee for a new one.

Asked for their views on the application, Tenby Town Council noted that they had received several complaints about the premises in recent weeks.

Two complaints referred to "excessive noise from a disco," while others complained about "rowdyism from the beer garden at 1.30 pm in the afternoon."

Clr. Miss Lis James felt that the town council were not qualified enough to deal with the application.

"I don't think we're in a position to say yea or nay," she opined. "I think we should just note the complaints and leave it up to the licensing committee."

Clr. Stuart Fecci, chairing the meeting in the absence of the Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, who had declared an interest, pointed out that the town council had to voice an opinion one way or the other.

"We've allowed licences for other premises like the Normandie, the Three Mariners and Tenby House Hotel, some of which have also had complaints," Clr. Miss James pointed out. "If we object to this, someone will have to attend and explain why, which on past experience, just won't happen.

"Every licensed premises in the town is likely to experience problems. I don't feel we have the legal knowledge to determine these applications."

Clr. Fecci again pointed out that, as a consultee, the town council had to express an opinion, so Clr. Miss James proposed approval of the application.

No objections

No objections were raised by Tenby Town Council this week to an application by Mrs. Lesley Fisher for a gaming licence at the town's Tenby House Hotel.
