Local councillors have given their backing to plans by Pembrokeshire County Council to transform the former MOD building on Tenby pier into a new harbourmaster's office and visiting yacht station.

Discussing the application at Tuesday night's meeting of Tenby Town Council, Clr. Mike Evans told his colleagues that the plans were part of a large ongoing scheme of developments in the harbour area.

"With more and more yachts visiting Tenby, the facilities will provide an ideal stop-off point for visitors, and this will encourage them into the harbour and give them a proper welcome," he said, citing Tenby as the missing link in the middle for travellers sailing from Swansea to destinations such as Fishguard and Pembroke Dock.

With the Welsh Assembly launching their 'Making The Waves' initiative to link up different marinas in the area, Clr. Evans felt the plans would help improve tourism in the area.

Facilities provided at the new yacht station for visitors would include showers and dryers, electricity plug-ins and also a full service station when yachts pull in at the jetty.

"With more yachts visiting the harbour, I think it could look even more spectacular than it already does," said Clr. Evans, with Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward adding that the Tenby harbour scene was one of the most "picturesque" you could find.

The council's recommendations will now be passed on to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.
