A local councillor has urged the county council to implement more safety measures on a busy road outside three schools in Tenby.
Speaking at Tuesday night's meeting of Tenby Town Council, Clr. David Morgan said that he would like to see a 20 mph limit zone introduced along Heywood Lane where the entrances to the Junior and Infants Schools along with Greenhill School are located.
Clr. Morgan said that he had seen traffic calming measures introduced along routes to plenty of other schools across the county, including schools in Manorbier, Pembroke and Lamphey.
"I'd like to know what Pembrokeshire County Council are doing for the care of over 1,600 pupils in Tenby.
"Speeding along that road is getting worse, surely it's time that some form of speed control measures are introduced," stressed Clr. Morgan.
Clr. Mike Evans said that a lot of investment had been made by the county council into the 'Safe Routes To School' scheme in recent times, but that a specific request would have to be put in for a 20 mph limit zone.
"I think you'll agree that the congestion situation on Heywood Lane has vastly improved from the chaos that was there four years ago and the county council had suggested that they would review the area again after the decriminalisation of parking in the area had been brought in," he said.
"I'd fully endorse looking into introducing a 20 mph limit zone in the area after consultations with residents. I'd also like to see the possibility of speeding measures introduced along Narberth Road and Serpentine Road, as speeding seems to have increased quite a bit in recent times along those routes," added Clr. Evans.
On the subject of safety and traffic management, the town clerk told members that he had also heard from the county council's traffic engineer, Ben Blake, on the possibility of moving the traffic crossing along The Norton, slightly up the road, as councillors had recently reported that they felt a post was obstructing the view of motorists when pedestrians, in particular young children, were approaching the crossing.
The town clerk said that Mr. Blake had informed him that the county council were willing to re-examine the crossing's location, but were mindful of the mini-roundabout nearby and the future development of the Gatehouse site.
Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane said it was more important to consider the safety of small children ahead of a future development and suggested that a site meeting be called to highlight the concerns.
Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown remarked that the introduction of a pelican crossing with traffic lights might be another option.
