Three of the greatest composers who have ever lived feature in Côr Dyfed Choir’s next concert to be given at St Mary’s Church Tenby on Saturday, March 19, at 7.30 pm.
The programme contains two short masses: Schubert’s ever popular Mass in G and Haydn’s masterly Little Organ Mass. The sublime music of these works reflects the religious faith and certainty of the two composers, while the contrast between the two makes for interesting listening. Haydn’s ‘Insanæ et vanæ curæ’, urging mankind to follow the word of God and to reject earthly vanity, is operatic in character. Lovers of Haydn’s music may be surprised at the strident, almost rumbustious, nature of the music. The organ solo demonstrates another facet of Haydn in his playful Three pieces for a Musical Clock.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music needs no introduction and this concert features two of his most well-known works: Ave Verum, probably the most well loved of all motets, and the ever popular Laudate Dominum, taken from a six movement piece for the Roman Catholic Vespers service.
The fourth composer to be represented in the concert, Antonio Lotti, is not so immediately recognisable, but his music is full of exquisite harmonies, as can be heard in his Crucifixus.
The choir, led by Oliver Waterer, will be accompanied by the string ensemble from one of the leading independent professional orchestras in Britain: The British Sinfonietta, together with Simon Pearce on the organ.
Tickets priced £10 (including post-concert refreshments) are available at the door, from Dales Music Store, Tenby, Main Street Music, Pembroke, Elements of Pembrokeshire, Saundersfoot, or telephone 01834 842 291
