Tenby councillors are seeking to set up a meeting with Pembrokeshire County Council's head of environmental services, Mr. Barry Davies, to discuss public conveniences in the town.

The call came at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, following a letter received from Mr. Davies.

Councillors had recently written to the county council voicing concern over the lack of facilities within the town, and were also unhappy with news that the public toilets in South Parade were due to close.

However, in a letter of response, Mr. Davies stated that the county council had actually improved public conveniences in the Tenby area over the years, listing a number of locations that had seen their toilets refurbished.

Councillors, though, were left unimpressed, with Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward describing the letter as "laughable."

Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas also felt that it was time they met face to face with Mr. Davies over the matter.

"I'd really like someone from the county council to talk to us about the matter; there must be somewhere in the town that they can put a public convenience," she said.

Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown also felt that a meeting would be the best way to progress. "We need a softly softly approach to this matter, and work together with the county council on it," she remarked. "My fear is if we push for another toilet in the centre of town, we may lose another facility we already have," she added. Clr. Mike Evans also urged for a "sensible approach" to discussions.

"If it's the case that the South Parade toilets close at the end of the summer, then we should request that the toilets in Upper Frog Street are re-opened simultaneously," he said. It was agreed that a letter should be written to Mr. Davies inviting him to a meeting.
