Despite posting a tremendous 40 points at Trefloyne, the best individual score over the two legs, Huw Roberts could not quite catch Richard Morton whose 36 hole total of 73 points was just enough for him to be crowned A.J.O. Memorial champion of 2008. This year's event, held annually in memory of the late Arthur Ormond MBE, really was a game of two halves. At the first leg played at the tough Tenby links on Saturday, June 14, the 148 competitors basked in glorious sunshine. However, conditions were not so good at the maturing parkland layout of Trefloyne last Saturday and the damp weather meant that a number of the less committed cried off. Consequently, the field for the second leg was reduced to 105. This was the sixth A.J.O. Memorial and, as in previous years, home players dominated the leaderboard at Tenby. Tenby members occupied the top 10 places. Friends Chris Smith and Simon Evans top scored with 37 pts, Paul Hoyland and Mike Schooling claimed 36 and Chris Beecher, Ian Thomas and Richard Morton each came in with 35. On 34 pts were Richard Reed, Rob Hall and James Moffatt, who were joined by Trefloyne youngster James Maxwell. Tenby's Huw Roberts and the young trio from Trefloyne, Matthew McMann, Ben Price and last year's champion Dan Edwards, were in a group on 32. Although the top three slots at Trefloyne last weekend went to Tenby golfers, Trefloyne members accounted for 15 of the first 21 places and many of these were up-and-coming youngsters. Huw Roberts's 40 pts included a 'blob' at the short sixth. Second was Martin Yates with an excellent 39. However, Tenby's Richard Morton, a student at Cardiff University, put together another wonderful round of 73 gross which equated to 38 pts and this was sufficient for him to claim the 2008 title. His round included two birdie 2s. Richard has been in fine form in recent weeks and he thoroughly deserved his victory. Local doctor Roberts was a very close runner-up with an aggregate of 72 pts and juniors Maxwell and McMann were third and fourth with 70 and 69, respectively. First leg leaders Smith, Schooling, former winner Beecher and Thomas all fell by the wayside, as did many others. Hoyland was away on holiday. Evans maintained most of his form, scoring 32 pts for a total of 69 and Price improved by three to 35 pts, totalling 67. Defending champion Edwards had a very creditable aggregate of 66 pts for seventh position. The Tenby Observer Cup is the 'gross' competition. This year there were two players head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Morton, who plays off three, had rounds of 74 and 73, which gave him 67 'gross' points, but Maxwell's 73 and 73 translated to 68 pts and the 17-year-old is this year's winner of the Tenby Observer Cup. In the ladies' section, Tenby junior Georgia Thomas, who won the glass bowl last year, was a clear winner in the first leg at Tenby, her 39 pts putting her seven ahead of her colleague Emma Guerreiro and 10-year-old Kristalle Blum, the youngest competitor in the event, who both came in with 32. Tenby's Heather Morgan had 31 pts and Trefloyne's Ann-Marie Dassen and Anne Morgan each scored 30. At Trefloyne, the second leg was dominated by home players. Fair Fraser won with 34 pts, Michelle Richards had 33 and Dianne Neale plus Linda Kromrei both made 32. However, although she managed only 26 pts, this was adequate for Georgia Thomas to retain her crown as ladies' champion with an aggregate of 65 pts. Fair Fraser was runner-up with 62 and Michelle Richards and Kristalle Blum totalled 61 and 60, respectively. At the prize-giving, Richard Ormond apologised for that day's weather and commented that both courses were in an excellent condition. He thanked both clubs for hosting the A.J.O. Memorial and the two PGA professionals, Rhys Harry, of Tenby, and Christine Burton, of Trefloyne, together with their staff, for their invaluable assistance. The leading scores were as follows: First leg at Tenby: Chris Smith and Simon Evans (both 37 pts), Paul Hoyland and Mike Schooling (both 36), Chris Beecher, Ian Thomas and Richard Morton (all 35), Richard Reed, Rob Hall, James Moffatt and James Maxwell (all 34), Philip Andrews, Harri Jackola, Stephan Jones, Steve Amos and Richard Caley (all 33).
