Six teachers from Africa paid a visit to County Hall in Haverfordwest last week. The teachers from Ethiopia and South Africa were guests of honour at a chairman's reception marking a unique exchange scheme. The British Council run scheme links three UK schools and three African schools with the teachers involved visiting each other over a three-year period. Schools taking part in West Wales are Tasker Milward in Haverfordwest, Greenhill in Tenby and Ysgol Emlyn in Newcastle Emlyn. Earlier this year, teachers from the three Welsh schools and those in South Africa visited Ethiopia, while this autumn, it was the turn of the teachers from Africa to visit West Wales. Simegn Asamnew Derebe, Desta Sisay Dubale and Fantaye Tamiru Mihrete from Ethiopia, along with Ndomdoleni Maphaha, Wilson Rasikhinya and Sammy Maano from South Africa, spent a day in each of the secondary schools and also visited some of their feeder schools prior to the reception. Clr. Islwyn Howells, cabinet member for children and young people, said the scheme aimed to help pupils become more aware of the culture of other countries and understand the lives of children in different parts of the world. "It is hoped that the schools involved build upon these visits and embed their experiences into the work of the school beyond the life of the project," he said.
