Two local postmasters met with Tenby councillors this week to voice their concerns over the threat of more rural Post Offices being closed.
Tenby and Kilgetty postmaster, Mr. John Murphy, and Mr. R. N. Greaves, of Hakin Post Office, put forward their views at Tuesday night's meeting of Tenby Town Council, in light of the potential demise of the Post Office network following the Department of Works and Pensions recent announcement.
The prospect of thousands of rural Post Offices closing comes in wake of the government's decision not to renew a £1bn contract.
Currently, four million people receive their pension or benefit payment thanks to Post Office Card Accounts, but the state will not renew the contract when it expires in 2010.
Mr. Murphy and Mr. Greaves warned that the closure of rural Post Offices could have a knock-on effect on local businesses and shops, as people would be forced to travel to bigger towns to spend their money.
A petition has been launched by local Post Offices in support of keeping them open.
Councillors agreed that the prospect of losing the area's Post Offices could have a devastating effect on spending in local towns and offered to write to the Welsh Assembly and local MPs in support of the postmasters' views.
