Pembrokeshire police are becoming concerned that there has been an increase in the number of garden shed and garage burglaries as we approach the summer months.

A number of burglaries have already occurred and valuable items stolen. These include lawn mowers, strimmers, cement mixers and hedge cutters.

"There will always be a minority of people who are intent on stealing property that does not belong to them, but we can do a lot to remove temptation and make things more difficult for the thief," said a police spokesman.

Crime prevention is a priority, so police are advising that people check the security of their shed and garages.

Officers advise people to check that the locks are substantial and in good repair and solid. Cut down any trees or shrubbery that may give a 'would-be thief' a hiding place or cover that could help facilitate a break-in, and repair broken or cracked windows.

They also suggest people replace rotten wood around windows and doors and ask them to try and put valuable items out of sight.

"Be vigilant and if you have any suspicions about strangers or strange vehicles, report the matter to the local police station or your Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator, taking the registration number of any vehicle and a description of the person or people concerned," added the spokesman.

"If you are offered any garden tools and implements at bargain prices from someone you don't know or are unsure of, think twice before you buy and report any suspicions to the police."
